Trading flesh, selling souls

A growing demand for young girls as a result of misconceptions that
sex with a virgin can cure HIV/AIDS is resulting in India becoming one
of the top women trafficking destinations in the world. Several young girls are being brought to the country every day for prostitution,
discovers Nitin Jugran Bahuguna.
Trafficking in humans for commercial sexual exploitation and forced labour is escalating into a major heinous industry in South Asia.
India figures among the top human trafficking destinations, with over
35,000 young girls and women from Bangladesh and Nepal being brought into the country every year.
There are many reasons for this booming, illegal international trade
that rakes in an annual turnover of US$32 billion at the expense of
millions of victims.
They range from displacement caused by natural disasters that could prompt increased migration leading to greater susceptibility to human trafficking; a growing gender imbalance due to female foeticide and infanticide, creating a demand for women and girls to provide sexual services and a market for trafficking for marriage; and a growing demand for young girls as a result of misconceptions that sex with a virgin can cure HIV/AIDS.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), between two to three million people are trafficked annually in and out of India. Most disturbingly, a large number of people, especially girls and women, from states such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar
Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa and the north-eastern region, are
trafficked to the metros such as Delhi and Mumbai.
People from these states are trafficked to work in brothels, dance
bars, pubs, restaurants, friendship clubs, massage parlours and for
domestic chores, says Dr P M Nair, a senior police official and
co-author of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) study
entitled 'Trafficking in Women and Children in India'. (The study was
published in 2005 and re-printed in 2006 and 2007.)

Una guía para el aborto dentro de la ley
A días de finalizar su gestión, Ginés González García aprobó la distribución
de la Guía Técnica para la Atención de los Abortos No Punibles. Pone al
alcance de los médicos los procedimientos clínicos y quirúrgicos
recomendados por la OMS para la interrupción de un embarazo, incluido el
aborto con medicamentos.
El texto apunta a evitar que se exija a las mujeres una autorización
judicial, como ocurrió a jóvenes violadas en Guernica y Paraná.

El Ministerio de Salud de la Nación empezó a distribuir en hospitales del
país una Guía Técnica para la Atención Integral de los Abortos No Punibles,
con precisos lineamientos de cómo se debe proceder ante un pedido de una
interrupción de un embarazo permitida por la ley, con el objetivo de evitar
que esos casos se judicialicen. El documento oficial fue elaborado por un
equipo convocado por la Secretaría de Programas Sanitarios, con el apoyo de
la Organización Panamericana de la Salud. Y fue aprobado en los últimos días
por el ministro Ginés González García. Se trata de una especie de manual,
mucho más amplio e integral que los protocolos de atención de abortos no
punibles como el que se sancionó por ley la semana última en La Pampa o los
que rigen en la provincia de Buenos Aires, en el ámbito porteño y en
Rosario: son 50 páginas en las que se actualizan y ponen al alcance de los
profesionales de la salud los procedimientos clínicos y quirúrgicos
recomendados por la OMS para la interrupción de un embarazo, incluido el
aborto con medicamentos. Incluso, propone cómo iniciar la consulta, cómo
brindar contención a la mujer y cómo tratar el dolor, entre otros aspectos.
Y provee el marco jurídico para que los médicos se sientan respaldados en
sus prácticas. La guía interpreta en forma amplia el artículo 86, inciso 2º,
del Código Penal –como ya lo han hecho diversos juristas– de manera tal que
considera que cualquier mujer que resulta embarazada en una violación –y no
sólo aquellas que sufren discapacidad mental– tienen derecho a un aborto en
un hospital público. ....

(Alianza) invites you to join us at our next national conference La
Violencia Doméstica: From Emerging Dialogues to Social Transformation:
Celebrando 10 Años de Esfuerzos Unidos y Mirando Hacia el Futuro
(Celebrating 10 Years of United Efforts and Looking Toward the Future).
This two day event will be both a celebration of 10 years of collaborating efforts and successes addressing domestic violence in Latino communities and an opportunity to explore needed strategies for the next decade.
The goals of the conference include:
a.. Offering opportunities for participants to learn about promising practices for the provision of culturally and linguistically specific services for Latina/o families and communities
b.. Recognizing the advances of the "Violence Against Women's Movement" in Latino communities;
c.. Promoting domestic violence as a social justice/human rights issue
(including sexual assault and human trafficking) and exploring its
implications for Latino ommunities; and
d.. Creating tools for community organizing and community engagement initiatives that interconnect our efforts to end domestic violence with
broader efforts for social transformation affecting our families and communities.
Participants and presenters will represent a multidisciplinary body of the following sectors: survivors, youth, women, men, elders, service providers, community activists, therapists, counselors, trainers, artists, healers, law enforcement, judges, advocates, legal experts, policy makers, elected officials, researchers, etc.
Alianza is seeking workshop proposals that address this year's theme and objectives. Workshop proposals must demonstrate the use of strategies and/or approaches which are culturally and linguistically relevant to Latino
communities. Proposals are due December 31, 2007.

Queridas compañeras:
Como sabéis la Comisión para la investigación de malos tratos a mujeres está colaborando conjuntamente con otras Organizaciones españolas de cooperación al desarrollo, organizaciones de mujeres, organizaciones mexicanas y guatemaltecas tanto en España como en México y Guatemala desde hace años para sacar a la luz los feminicidios en ambos países y en América Latina, así como para apoyar el trabajo de las compañeras feministas mexicanas y guatemaltecas que desde hace más de doce años trabajan incluso con riesgos para su propia vida o la de sus familias.
La semana pasada hicimos un acto onjunto por el Feminicidio en Guatemala en la Casa de América que tuvo sus dificultades y sus resistencias internas para salir adelante por parte de la propia Casa de América, pero que al final vió la luz.
En este acto tuvimos conocimiento de que la responsable de Género de la Casa de América había dimitido siendo nombrado en su lugar el guatemalteco Alexander Sequén-Monchez.
Indagando en internet acerca de el descubrimos en la Comisión que es periodista y que en Guatemala escribió un artículo de opinión cuyo contenido atenta contra todas las mujeres, desprestigiando el trabajo de las organizaciones de mujeres que han luchado para esclarecer los asesinatos impunes de mujeres en Guatemala.
También hemos sabido en la Comisión que tiene una publicación titulada AMAR ES VIOLENTO.
No entendemos que una persona con estos antecedentes haya sido nombrada responsable del Área género de la Casa de América.

hola espero ke me puedan ayudar yo tengo una amiga ke fue violada a los 10 años por un familiar y aun ahora ke tiene 29 su familia no sabe nada ella esta muy mal porke no lo a superado y no kiere hablar de eso yo kiero saber como puedo ayudarle a superar eso aparte ella casi es anorexica y me preocupa mucho espero ke me ayuden rapido por su tiempo mil gracias

i was the victim or a crime five years ago and was awarded monetary restitution of $1,800. he was released from pirson 2 years ago and i still have recieved nothing on the restitution. what should i do. what are the options i have left.
