Freedom lost

After the invasion of Iraq, the US government claimed that women there had 'new rights and new hopes'. In fact their lives have become immeasurably worse, with rapes, burnings and murders now a daily occurrence.

Nicaraqua: Not One More Dead
from the Women’s Network from Nicaragua:

FOR THE LIFE OF WOMEN — NOT ONE MORE DEAD
neither by femicide nor by forced maternity

NETWORK OF WOMEN OF MATAGALPA

Once again, on 25 November, international day against violence towards women, we point out the multiple ways in which our society expresses this violence, and we cannot forget the women who have been assassinated. So far this year, more than 60 women have been assassinated just because they were women.

We remember them today, but we can’t even give an exact number of how many there are. Different public institutions give different numbers. The Ministry of Health keeps strict accounting of those who are sick and die from leptospirosis* or any other epidemic. But to know with certainty how many women have been attacked and how many assassinated is no easy task. No institution of the State takes on the job of knowing how many there are. Who, then, will take the responsibility to ensure that NO MORE be killed? Who will take the responsibility of bringing up and educating the children who are orphaned?

As long as prejudices and stereotypes persist and archaic values regarding women and the role we should play in our society, violence will continue, because violence is an instrument to perpetuate the abuse of power, to keep women subjected and submissive.

But we women are not always quiet; we do not always obey. We are learning to raise our voices, to look at situations directly and assert our rights. This is why violence against us has become more acute. We scold and admonish, we are not disposed to continue being subjected to the whims of others. That is why they keep attacking us…
why they kill us.

For the machos, it is not enough to peer at us, to raise their hands against us. Verbal aggression by which they invalidate us is not enough. They have to silence us and show that we are their property, that our bodies do not belong to us, and that they are not going to permit us to take control of our own lives.

And private men do that in their private lives to control the women they consider “theirs” — public men and politicians, too, the public functionaries, the church hierarchy who in a GRAND PACT have decided to use the lives and bodies of women to exert personal political leverage. This past year they have demonstrated this fact three consecutives times by criminalizing therapeutic abortion.

More than 80 women have died in the past year for reasons connected to a pregnancy, all of which could have been avoided if the women had more information, better health care and more power to make their own
decisions.

Many died because they were denied the right to a THERAPEUTIC ABORTION. Then, isn’t it somewhat demagogic to almost obsessively repeat the phrase “the people president”? Which people president?

Criminalization of abortion condemns to death the poorest women of our country and is also a clear message that women are not considered capable of deciding what is best for our own lives.

We have not seen the Women’s Institute nor the Family Ministry act aggressively to protect the rights of female children that are abused and raped and become pregnant as a result. We have not seen any forceful actions by the Supreme Court against those notaries who “marry” minors, thus legalizing the abuse committed against them

Speeches, good intentions, promises are not enough. We demand actions. In light of this, on 25 November, international day against violence towards women,

WE DEMAND
-That the crime of FEMICIDE be included in the Penal Code, with the maximum penalty. In the majority of cases, women are assassinated just for being women, for not being obedient and submissive to the will of a man, for wanting a better life without violence for themselves and for their children. The crime, therefore, and the penalty should be something different from those of crimes committed against men.

-That the State guarantee a registry that gives an exhaustive list of the various ways in which violence is expressed and especially in cases of femicide, along with information that will assist in defining priorities of the State to prevent, sanction and eradicate violence against women.

-Appropriation of sufficient fund in the federal budget to guarantee fiscal, forensic and alimentary resources to women in ALL the municipalities of the country, offering professional attention sensitive to the issue of gender violence.

-Inasmuch as violence was recognized by the Ministry of Health as a public health problem, we demand plans and campaigns for prevention and attention to women who are subjected to violence and that this issue be given the same priority as other health problems. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IS AN EPIDEMIC, TOO.

-NO MORE DOUBLE STANDARD — enough of using religious beliefs to institutionalize violence against women. Public officials are obligated to respect the law and to make it be respected. The Constitution guarantees that one cannot impede the rights of other by invoking religious beliefs (Art. 69 Cn).

-Fewer posters and more action. We women are “the people,” too. We are citizens and we are the majority among the poor.

FOR THE LIFE OF WOMEN — NOT ONE MORE DEAD neither by femicide nor by forced maternity

Statement by Ex-Prostitutes Against Legislated Sexual Servitude

We urge you to oppose any attempt to introduce a legal brothel in Vancouver.

As women who have been prostituted in Vancouver and in the light of these
facts :

. That current discourse on prostitution would have the public believe that it is normal work that simply needs to be better regulated
. That there is currently a proposal to open a legal brothel in Vancouver
. That this proposal is said to speak for current and former prostitutes of
Vancouver
. That this proposal promises to make the lives of prostituted women "safer"
at best
. That none of us have ever met a prostituted woman who would not leave the "trade" if she had a real chance to do so
. That we are women who have been abused on Canadian soil, by Canadian men while all levels of our Government did nothing to intervene.
. That some members of parliament are now advocating to legalize that abuse.

We want you to know :

We are women who have been harmed by prostitution. We believe that no amount of changing the conditions or the locations in which we were prostituted could ever have significantly reduced that harm.

We experience the normalizing of that harm by calling it "work" insulting at best.

It matters very little to us whether we were prostituted on the streets or
in the tolerated indoor venues and escort agencies of Vancouver. Our
memories are not of the locations but of the men who consistently acted as though we were not quite human. We remember the countless other men and
women who daily averted their eyes. We remember the utter lack of services or options that made any sense and the blatant denial of access to any kind of help or justice. We remember the need to "dumb down" our sense of entitlement to a better life so we could bear the one we were in. And we remember too well the numbing despair that came when we finally lost faith that there existed in this world anything decent and good.

We oppose any measure that would put more power in the hands of the men who abused us by telling them that they are legally entitled to do so. This proposal does not speak for us, would not have affected our level of safety in a way that matters, and would not have spared us the harm that is inherent in prostitution.

We are not impressed with lip service proposals to make prostituted women's lives "safer". Safer is not good enough. We consider it a violation of our
human rights that we were abandoned to years of situations that fit the definition of sexual assault under current law. But not only is this violence not recorded, not prosecuted, not punished. We are now being told that we chose it.

We believe that, where there is public and political will, lives can be
changed for the better. We do not believe the lie that prostitution is
inevitable. We believe it can be abolished.

As hosts of the 2010 games, we want our city, our home, to refuse to take part in the global flesh market that is sex tourism and send a message to the world that women will not be sold in Vancouver.

We believe that every sexually exploited woman represents a life wasted. We are greatly saddened for the lives of women lost in prostitution, as well as the loss of the sum of the contributions that countless women still living
would have made had they not been abandoned to sexual slavery.

We urge you all to refuse to believe that prostitution is normal or that is
an equal exchange "between two consenting adults".

We urge you to oppose any attempt to introduce a legal brothel in Vancouver.

GUIA DE GENERO SOBRE LA POLITICA DE PRESTAMOS
DEL BANCO MUNDIAL Y EL FMI

Autoras: Suzanna Dennis
y Elaine Zuckerman

Diciembre de 2006
Gender Action
Copyright © 2006 Gender Action

Sexual Assault Services Program fellowship at OVC

Dear Colleagues:

We are very excited to announce that the Office of Justice Programs has posted a new opportunity for an interested individual to apply for one of their Victim Assistance Fellowships which will specifically focus on sexual assault. This person would work directly on implementation of the Sexual Assault Services Program. It's a fantastic opportunity for the community. Others individuals may also be interested in applying for two other fellowships also funded through the Victim Assistance Fellowship Program. One is focused on Human Trafficking and Public Awareness, and one is focused on Field Outreach and Crime Victims' Rights Enforcement.

Here is the link to the pdf which explains in detail how to apply for the Fellowship. This is a great opportunity for someone with in-depth knowledge of sexual assault issues to have a direct hand in helping to shape federal policy. Please encourage applicants:

Revealed: 40% of people say women ‘to blame’ for rape
By John Bynorth
‘Startling’ survey highlights urgent need to challenge men’s attitudes
to consent

DAMNING EVIDENCE that public attitudes towards rape victims are
undermining Scotland's judicial system is revealed today in a major
new study obtained by the Sunday Herald.

Researchers who interviewed more than 700 potential rape trial jurors
between 18 and 65 years old for the charity Rape Crisis Scotland found
that 40% felt women contribute to an attack if they put themselves in
"risky" situations, such as willingly going home with a man.

Although 39% of people thought the victim is not to blame for being
raped, 61% were "unsure" or disagreed in various degrees. Rape Crisis
Scotland said the results are "startling" and highlighted the urgent
need for a major advertising campaign to challenge male preconceptions
about how women consent to sex.
