Muslim leader says families must help catch honour killers
By Andrew Johnson
Published: 13 January 2008
One of Britain's leading Muslims has called on his community to rise up against a culture of fear and help stamp out forced marriages and honour killings after the third high-profile court case in Britain in the past year.

Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, head of the Muslim Parliament in Britain, spoke out after a coroner ruled on Friday that 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed was "unlawfully killed" and that "the concept of an arranged marriage was central to the circumstances of her death".

Mr Siddiqui said he was certain the schoolgirl, who wanted to go to university and become a lawyer, was the victim of an honour killing. No charges have yet been bought by police, a failure Mr Siddiqui blamed on members of her family and close community closing ranks, even though some may have wanted to speak out.

An international or European treaty is needed for the protection of women against violence”
[07/01/08 15:00] In his latest Viewpoint, the Commissioner focuses on violence against women and the need for an enhanced effort to protect women’s rights. Proposing some practical measures to address the issue, Thomas Hammarberg also calls for a comprehensive international treaty aimed to “develop legally binding norms for the prevention and prosecution of violence against women".

Case Law Development:
Poverty Not A Basis for Termination of Parental Rights

The California Court of Appeals has issused an unpublished opinion that is an excellent case study of the relationship between poverty and termination of parental rights. A presumed father's parental rights had been terminated because he was unable to provide a stable home for his children, even though he had been an involved, caring father and the child protective services had found no harm or threat of harm to them at any time. The court of appeals reversed the termination, holding that the trial court must find that a presumed father is unfit before terminating parental rights. The court commented:

DCFS may not bootstrap the fact that Gerardo was too poor to afford housing, which would not have served as a legitimate ground for removing the boys in the first place, to support findings of detriment, all of which flow directly from the circumstances of Gerardo's poverty and his concomitant willingness to leave his sons in his family's care while he stayed close, maintained familial ties and worked to raise rent money. This is particularly so when DCFS might have assisted Gerardo to obtain affordable housing, but made no effort to do so....It is not up to Gerardo to prove he is a fit parent. Rather, it is up to DCFS to satisfy its constitutional burden to establish, by clear and convincing evidence, that he is not.

Educator's Guide to 'Crimes of War: What the Public Should Know'

Dear Colleagues,

HREA is pleased to announce the publication of its Educator's Guide for the second edition of "Crimes of War: What the Public Should Know". This Guide, developed in cooperation with the Crimes of War Project (publisher of the second edition) and the United States Institute of Peace, is available online at HREA's website at: www.hrea.org/crimesofwar

The intention of this Educator's Guide is to make prominent writings of field journalists on war crimes accessible to youth, young adults, and future decision makers, as well as to inform the general public. In the Educator's Guide there are eight thematic chapters: weapons; violence against civilians; child soldiers; sexual violence; terrorism and torture; genocide; international courts and tribunals; and humanitarian intervention. Each of the thematic chapters is linked to the second edition of Crimes of War (available at www.crimesofwar.org) and contains the following elements: an essential question, learning objectives, methodology, background information on the theme, discussion questions, extension activities, ways that learners can take action, and additional film, web and print resources that might be used in the classroom. Teachers will be pleased to know that all chapters are aligned with National education standards in the United States.

With all good wishes,

We, the Women of the World
denounce the violence and the various forms of exploitation
that men have inflicted and continue to inflict on us for millennia :
for our bound feet

our necks imprisoned in rings

our sex cut or sewn up

our plate-lips or our pierced ears

our chastity belts or virginity controls

our corsets that suffocate us

for our bodies anorexically starved or fattened according to their rules

for the women they deprive of education, liberty, autonomy

for the women shut into harems or in the home

behind the veil, the tchador, the niqab or the burqa

for the precocious weddings, the imposed sexual intercourse

the unwanted pregnancies, the forced sterilizations

the abortion of female fetuses

for polygyny, repudiation, the dowry system

the discrimination in inheritance

for economic exploitation, domestic slavery, the double work day

for the blows, the insults, the moral and sexual harassment

for the private or collective rapes

for pornography, prostitution

women sold in “ temporary marriages ” or by Organized crime

for the acid throwing, the stoning and the rite of Sati

for the “ witches ” burned alive

for the honor killings, the murders of women

for religious or political slaughters

for the little girls they kill or prevent from being born : 100.000.000 women missing in the world …

for the control they have exercised and continue to exercise on our lives

for our lives that they have stolen

for our intelligence that they have smothered

for the divisions they have created among us to keep us enslaved,

for all the appalling crimes men have committed against women since time immemorial,

for having made us the symbol of EVIL in the misogynous religions they have created in their own image, a characteristic tenet of any racist ideology,

for our Human Rights that have been scorned, We, the Women of the World, ask the Governments of the various countries for apologize and to place a true value on the financial, legal, professional and political compensations that women have the right to receive.

Service group fights human trafficking in U.S.
by Kimberly S. Wetzel

An estimated 14,500 to 17,500 people, mostly women and children, are trafficked into the United States each year, most to be used for sexual exploitation, according to national statistics.

Hoping to raise community awareness about the problem, the Soroptimist International of El Cerrito will hold informational events on human trafficking Jan. 12 in Berkeley and Jan. 16 in El Cerrito.

The Berkeley event next Saturday is free and will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Shambhala Center, 2177 Bancroft Way.

"It's a misconception that trafficking only occurs in far-away countries. It occurs everywhere, even in our own backyards," said Carol Dippel, El Cerrito Soroptimist president. "We want the public to become aware of it in depth, and to be able to recognize a woman or a girl, perhaps a neighbor, who may need help getting out of a dire situation."

Each year, between 800,000 and 900,000 people are trafficked across international borders, according to statistics. There are reports of sexual trafficking in at least 20 states, with most cases occurring in California, New York and Florida.

The Berkeley event next Saturday is free and will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Shambhala Center, 2177 Bancroft Way. Refreshments will be served. The guest speaker will be Sue Finch, Soroptomist's founder region governor. She will talk about trafficking as a worldwide issue.

The El Cerrito event Jan. 16 is a luncheon scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Mira Vista Country Club, 7901 Cutting Blvd. The cost is $20, and reservations can be made by calling Dippel at 510-868-1879. The guest speaker will be Norma Hotaling, founder and executive director of the Standing Against Global Exploitation Project.

Similar events will be held by other Bay Area Soroptimist groups to kick off the National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness on Friday. For more information, call Dippel at 510-868-1879.

I would like to take a moment to remember Georgia Moses. She was one of my best friends through her short time at middle school. We used to play and spend the night at eachothers houses. She lived down the street from me and we would walk home together. She was a wonderful girl with a huge heart. After she moved to SR is when it started to get bad. Her mother was ill and was living with a creepy man that i believe is the one who killed her. I remember also when we all heard of her death, our principal at MSMS refused to even mention her name because she was not at school much and he thought she was a problem child. I am happy to learn that she now has a memorial there. I would just like to send a message to her dear friends that she is remembered by me. I always think of her around January because her birthday would be Jan 7th. She would have been 23 today. I hope that someday someone will come forward with information leading to an arrest. I love you Georgia and will alwa!
ys remember you.
