Stamford, RI Marriott Says Woman Who Was Raped In Front Of Her Children In Their Garage Failed To “Exercise Due Care”

According to the Stamford Advocate,

"A downtown hotel being sued by a woman raped at gunpoint in its parking garage is claiming she was careless, negligent and “failed to exercise due care for her own safety and the safety of her children and proper use of her senses and facilities,” according to court documents."

They are blaming the victim for her own rape and lack of adequate security in their garage?? Are they suggesting she was mentally incapable because she did not anticipate being raped while she was putting her child in a carseat?? Jezebel has the full story here.

I frequently stay at Marriott hotels when I travel, but I will not be doing so until they issue an apology and offer a substantive plan for assuring the safety of all and all customers and particularly women and children, and I urge others to do the same. You can also write to them here.

SEMANA DE LOS DERECHOS HUMANOS DE LAS MUJERES EN HONDURAS

DOCUMENTARÁ LAS VIOLACIONES a LOS DDHH DE LAS MUJERES DURANTE EL GOLPE MILITAR

New Release from

Mrs. Goundo's Daughter
A film by Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater

U.S./Mali, 2009, 60 minutes, Color, DVD, Bambara, French, English subtitles
Order No. W09974

Mrs. Goundo is fighting to remain in the United States. But it’s not just because of the ethnic conflict and drought that has plagued her native Mali. Threatened with deportation, her two-year-old daughter could be forced to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM), like 85 percent of women and girls in Mali. Using rarely cited grounds for political asylum, Goundo must convince an immigration judge that her daughter is in danger.

Sensitive and moving, this important film reveals how women are profoundly affected by the legal struggles surrounding immigration. As issues of asylum, international law and human rights collide with FGM and its devastating health consequences, filmmakers Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater travel between an FGM ceremony in a Malian village involving dozens of girls to the West African expatriate community of Philadelphia, where Mrs. Goundo challenges beliefs and battles the American legal system for her child’s future.

"An invaluable teaching tool… a 'must-see' for women's rights, human rights, and immigration law teachers, lawyers, students, and organizers.”

Hope Lewis, Professor of Law
Northeastern University

Afghanistan passes 'barbaric' law diminishing women's rights

Rehashed legislation allows husbands to deny wives food if they fail to obey sexual demands

Jon Boone in Kandahar guardian.co.uk, Friday 14 August 2009

Afghanistan has quietly passed a law permitting Shia men to deny their wives food and sustenance if they refuse to obey their husbands' sexual demands, despite international outrage over an earlier version of the legislation which President Hamid Karzai had promised to review.

The new final draft of the legislation also grants guardianship of children exclusively to their fathers and grandfathers, and requires women to get permission from their husbands to work.

"It also effectively allows a rapist to avoid prosecution by paying 'blood money' to a girl who was injured when he raped her," the US charity Human Rights Watch said.

In early April, Barack Obama and Gordon Brown joined an international chorus of condemnation when the Guardian revealed that the earlier version of the law legalised rape within marriage, according to the UN.

Although Karzai appeared to back down, activists say the revised version of the law still contains repressive measures and contradicts the Afghan constitution and international treaties signed by the country.

Islamic law experts and human rights activists say that although the language of the original law has been changed, many of the provisions that alarmed women's rights groups remain, including this one: "Tamkeen is the readiness of the wife to submit to her husband's reasonable sexual enjoyment, and her prohibition from going out of the house, except in extreme circumstances, without her husband's permission. If any of the above provisions are not followed by the wife she is considered disobedient."

The law has been backed by the hardline Shia cleric Ayatollah Mohseni, who is thought to have influence over the voting intentions of some of the country's Shias, which make up around 20% of the population. Karzai has assiduously courted such minority leaders in the run up to next Thursday's election, which is likely to be a close run thing, according to a poll released yesterday.

Human Rights Watch, which has obtained a copy of the final law, called on all candidates to pledge to repeal the law, which it says contradicts Afghanistan's own constitution.

The group said that Karzai had "made an unthinkable deal to sell Afghan women out in the support of fundamentalists in the August 20 election".

Brad Adams, the organisation's Asia director, said: "The rights of Afghan women are being ripped up by powerful men who are using women as pawns in manoeuvres to gain power.

"These kinds of barbaric laws were supposed to have been relegated to the past with the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, yet Karzai has revived them and given them his official stamp of approval."

The latest opinion poll by US democracy group the International Republican Institute showed that although Karzai was up 13 points to 44% since the last survey in May, his closest rival, Abdullah Abdullah, had soared from 7% to 26%.

If those numbers prove accurate, it would mean the contest would have to go to a second round run-off vote in early October. In that scenario, 50% of voters said they would vote for Karzai and 29% for Abdullah.

The survey was conducted in mid to late July, so it is not known whether Abdullah has made further gains on Karzai.

He could further increase his chance of victory by joining forces with Ashraf Ghani, the former finance minister who is also running on a platform fiercely critical of Karzai.

Fifty-eight per cent of the 2,400 people polled by IRI said they would like to see an alliance between Abdullah and Ghani, who is polling in fourth place.

Rocky Mount North Carolina On Edge As 9 Women Vanish

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — They spent their nights jumping in and out of strange cars, trolling otherwise empty streets lined with decaying storefronts and boarded-up homes. Many sold sex to support drug habits or children left in the care of worried, hardworking grandmothers.

Even when they were picked up for drugs or prostitution, nights in jail looming, they called home to let their families know they were OK. Then, one by one, the calls stopped.

Since 2005, nine women who lived at the edges of the poor community in this small North Carolina city have disappeared. Six bodies were found along rural roads just a few miles outside town, most so decomposed that investigators could not tell how they died. At least one of the women was strangled, and all the deaths have been classified as homicides. Three women are still missing.

Police will not say whether they suspect a serial killer, but people in the community about 60 miles northeast of Raleigh do, and they're impatient with law enforcement efforts to investigate the slayings.

After the latest body – that of 31-year-old Jarneice Hargrove – was found in June behind a burnt-out house that was once a crack den, local law enforcement and state police formed a task force. In July, the FBI got involved.

But friends and family say it didn't happen soon enough

"We got someone out here that's snatching up females," said Stephanie Jones, a 28-year-old nursing student. "I mean, next person could be your grandmother, it could be me, it could be my mother, it could be my daughter."

Jones, who knew two of the victims, has founded a group that is raising money to publicize the slayings and search for those still missing. She says the cases are being swept under the rug because of the victims' lifestyles.

Femicide: There's Not Enough Outrage
by Antonia Zerbisias

Published on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 by The Toronto Star

`There's not enough outrage," lamented one women's rights activist at a candlelight vigil for the three women cut down last Tuesday night in a Pittsburgh-area aerobics class.

As the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted, only 75 people showed up to mourn Heidi Overmier, 46, Elizabeth Gannon, 49, and Jody Billingsley, 38, massacred by a man, who didn't know them, simply because they were women.

That's unusual as the vast majority of femicide victims are killed by their intimate partners or male relatives.

But, as Toronto author Brian Vallee points out in his 2007 book The War on Women, nobody counts the dead, nobody connects the dots, nobody calls out the problem.

"Compare the raw numbers," he writes of the period 2000-06. "In the same seven-year period when 4,588 U.S. soldiers and police officers were killed by hostiles or by accident, more than 8,000 women – nearly twice as many – were shot, stabbed, strangled, or beaten to death by the intimate males in their lives. In Canada, compared to the 101 Canadian soldiers and police officers killed, more than 500 women – nearly five times as many – met the same fate."

There's not enough outrage.

As we all know now, George Sodini, 48 – whose racist and misogynist online diary reads like a terrorist manifesto – couldn't get a date, couldn't get sex, couldn't lure any women to his modest side-split furnished with, as he points out in a spooky video, "Couch and chair; they match. The women will really be impressed."

Well, they weren't.

And so Sodini's "exit plan" was to go down in history in a blaze of gunfire, taking as many women with him as he could.

Just like Marc Lépine, who hated "the feminists" so much he slaughtered 14 women at Montreal's École Polytechnique in 1989, just like Charles Carl Roberts who executed Amish school girls three years ago, and, arguably, even like Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho, a reported stalker of female students who took up-the-skirt photos, yet another violent act of misogyny takes place.

No, no, we say. They were just loners, losers, crazies with guns.

There's not enough outrage.

That only feminist bloggers and a very few mainstream pundits called last week's fitness club massacre the hate crime it was should jolt us out of our sexist complacency.

"We profess to being shocked at one or another of these outlandish crimes, but the shock wears off quickly in an environment in which the rape, murder and humiliation of females is not only a staple of the news, but an important cornerstone of the nation's entertainment," The New York Times's Bob Herbert noted on Friday.

New Path To Restore Identities Of Missing
Web Site Combines Details of Remains, Disappearances
Maria Glod
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, July 21, 2009

Authorities in Virginia have identified the body of a teenager who went missing 14 years ago in their first success using a new nationwide database that seeks to put names on thousands of dead people who have gone unidentified, sometimes for decades.

Prosecutors in Maryland hope to use the same system to finally close a homicide case that has resulted in a mistrial and a hung jury.

The U.S. Department of Justice's National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NamUs, is an online tool aimed at naming the countless John and Jane Does whose remains have been shelved in the offices of medical examiners and police forensic labs across the country. It matches missing persons cases with the nameless bodies or skeletons.

Hawaii Needs a State Trafficking Law

Sign the Petition to Enact State Law!
(Petition Sign-in Below)

Overview
Hawaii remains 1 of 12 states in the nation that has not passed legislation making Human Trafficking a felony offense while protecting victims of this horrible crime.

200,000 U.S. children are forced or manipulated into the sex-trafficking trade. 1.2 million children worldwide are trafficked. Hawaii sees about 300 runaways per month at high risk for recruitment by pimp/traffickers.

Existing local laws do not adequately address the problem of Human Trafficking.

Please sign this petition to urge Governor Linda Lingle, the Hawaii State Legislature, City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle and Attorney General Mark Bennett to support legislation to create a state Human Trafficking law.

The Petition Letter

To: Governor Linda Lingle, Hawaii State Legislature, City Prosecutor, State Attorney General

The rise in Human Trafficking among international and domestic trafficked persons is increasing in Hawaii, adversely affecting the image of the state and therefore tourism and the economy. Hawaii remains 1 of 12 states in the nation that has not passed legislation making Human Trafficking a felony offense while protecting the victims of this crime.

According to the FBI Innocence Lost Initiative for Operation Cross Country II, Honolulu is 1 of 29 cities recognized as a place with a considerable amount of child sex-trafficking in addition to adult Human Trafficking.

Existing Hawaii laws are ineffective to deter Human Trafficking and protecting victims. Effective deterrents require bringing traffickers, and patrons who solicit services from trafficked persons, to justice. Additionally, current prostitution statutes place both patrons of prostitution and prostituted persons into the same criminal category.

Victims often find it difficult or impossible to report the crimes committed against them or to assist in the investigation and prosecution of these crimes because they are subjected to coercion and intimidation, including physical or psychological control, persecution, debt bondage, and fear of retribution.

The lack of legal definition in our Hawaii statutes creates a deficit of adequate services and facilities in Hawaii to meet the needs of trafficking victims in terms of health care, housing, education, medical services, and legal assistance-- services which safely support the recovery and ability of trafficked persons to regain control of their lives and also to assist with the prosecution of traffickers.

In order to deter Human Trafficking, Hawaii must recognize that Human Trafficking is a serious offense. This can be simply accomplished by prescribing appropriate punishment, giving priority to the prosecution of trafficking offenses, and protecting, rather than punishing, the victims of these offenses.

The residents of Hawaii are asking the State Legislature to enact a Human Trafficking statute compatible with existing state statutes as well as with the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Act to allow local law enforcement and city prosecutors to effectively combat the growing problem of Human Trafficking. Trafficking is a contemporary manifestation of slavery. We must ensure the just and effective punishment of traffickers, and protect the human rights of trafficked persons.

We urge the State Legislature, the Governor of Hawaii, the City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle, and the State Attorney General Mark Bennett, and their relevant Departments to support, to enact, and to enforce Human Trafficking legislation. We support leaders who support the passage of state legislation to create a Human Trafficking statute.

Thank you for taking the time to read our petition letter.

Sincerely,
