Hillary Clinton Pledges to 'Banish Sexual Violence'
Originally posted Friday August 21, 2009 Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may be taking some well-earned R&R in Bermuda this week, but last week, the former First Lady and U.S. Senator wrapped up a grueling seven-nation diplomatic mission to Africa.

While much was made back home about her snapping at a Congolese student who asked her about Bill Clinton's thoughts on a trade issue ("My husband is not the secretary of state, I am," she retorted), the emotional heart of her tour was also her most dangerous stop – in Goma, inside the war zone in eastern Congo, where she tearfully met rape victims on Aug. 11.

In this exclusive Op-Ed piece for PEOPLE.com, Secretary Clinton shares what she learned on her visit – and what she will do about it.

What I Saw in Goma
By Hillary Rodham Clinton

In 11 days of travel across Africa, I saw humanity at its worst – and at its best. In Goma last week, I saw both.

How to Keep Activism Alive? Dolores Huerta Offers Tips!
by globalfundforwomen

Dolores Huerta
Posted by Heather Moseley and Annie Wilkinson

“Wozani!” we all stood and cried together—Dolores Huerta, us, and a room full of activists and community members at the recent International Museum of Women “Extraordinary Voices, Extraordinary Change” program in San Francisco. Wozani, a Zulu call for unity meaning “people together,” is the phrase Huerta shared in closing; as an offering of inspiration and energy for continued activism. Whether uttered in the South African savanna, or the streets of California—“Si se puede!**”, the expression celebrates our collective power and common belief that social change is possible. It binds us together in our struggles for human rights, justice and equality and keeps us marching, adelante.

This is just one of the concepts Huerta conveyed, as she reflected on her life as a Chicana woman, mother, labor activist, and co-founder of United Farm Workers of America. You can also add long-time advocate for gender, racial, economic, and migrant justice to her resumé for good measure. With as much wit as wisdom, she shared her perspectives on what has kept her activism going strong for so many years. Here are but a few of the insights she shared over the course of 90 minutes:

Be strong. Let not a fear of criticism hold you back. Sometimes, Huerta said, “Women hold back because they’re afraid to be criticized…If you take a leadership role, a ‘warrior path’, you are going to have arrows thrown at you.” One need not look farther than the 2008 presidential campaign, the confirmation hearing of Justice Sotomayor, or the nightly news to see that much of this criticism is shrouded in sexist premises. We must step up and advance on, Huerta said.

We must engender our activism. “When a movement begins, we start fighting as humans. Only later do we see the need to fight for ourselves as women.” No movement for social and economic justice can achieve its goals without the full participation and equality of women. We must see all of our activism through a gender lens. Further, urged Huerta, “Promote female preachers, female politicians, and hope that this brings change to the policies.”

Practice civic engagement as a responsibility to future generations. “Specifically,” Huerta advised, “make time for civic participation.” Civic participation demands the full participation of all represented, including women. When asked how, as a mother of 11 children, Huerta managed full-time work and activism she responded that her civic engagement did not exclude her children. “Include your children where you can. Bring your kids to meetings. Rear the next generation of activists. Engage your children! Include them at a young age, or else in their sheltered existence they become afraid of the world.”

Huerta ended her comments as every effective organizer does—with a call to action—this one to show solidarity with Iranian voters. At nearly 80, Huerta shows no signs of slowing down.

**“Sí se puede” was coined by Dolores Huerta herself, along with fellow labor activist Cesar Chavez. According to the official glossary of the United Farm Workers, the phrase means, “Yes, it can be done!” but is often translated as “Yes we can” or “Yes you can.”

Malalai Joya: Don’t be fooled by this democratic façade – the people are betrayed
In hiding and in fear of her life, the Afghan MP and women's rights campaigner says the warlords have already won
By Malalai Joya

Like millions of Afghans, I have no hope in the results of today's election. In a country ruled by warlords, occupation forces, Taliban terrorists, drug money and guns, no one can expect a legitimate or fair vote. Even international observers have been speaking about widespread fraud and intimidation and, among the people on the street, there is a common refrain: the real winner has already been picked by the White House.

President Hamid Karzai has cemented alliances with brutal warlords and fundamentalists in order to maintain his position. Although our constitution forbids war criminals from running for office, the incumbent has named two notorious militia commanders as his vice-presidential running mates – Karim Khalili and Mohammad Qasim Fahim, both of whom stand accused of brutalities against our people.

ABA Commission On Domestic Violence Announces Launch Of National Domestic Violence Pro Bono Directory, Sponsored By Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine Program WEBWIRE – Thursday, August 20, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence today announced the launch of the first-ever National Domestic Violence Pro Bono Directory, a comprehensive national database of programs providing pro bono legal services to victims of domestic violence and made public online at www.probono.net/dv.

Although men also experience domestic violence, research shows the majority of victims are women. Around the world, at least one in four women has experienced some form of violence or abuse during her lifetime, and studies show some 10 million children witness domestic violence each year. This pro bono Web site, along with ABA and their partners’ other initiatives, is another positive step in the effort to prevent domestic violence and create awareness of the issue.

The online directory includes the types of cases these programs accept – e.g., immigration, housing, restraining orders, family law -- the scope of representation; the frequency and content of trainings for pro bono lawyers; and the on-going supervision and/or support provided to pro bono lawyers.

ENCUADRAMIENTO IDEOLÓGICO DE OPINIONES FRENTE A LA VIOLENCIA SEXUAL CONTRA LAS MUJERES
.

Rape of Colombian child by U.S. soldier sparks more debate over military bases

August 17, Salem Foreign Policy Examiner
Michelle Andujar

Sergeant Michael J. Cohen and a U.S. military contractor are accused of raping a 12 year old girl last August in a military base in Colombia.

Colombian Senator Gustavo Petro recently said the Colombian Congress tried to cover up the event, by preventing the child's mother from speaking during a debate over the future American bases in the country. He also mentioned that someone attempted to murder both the woman and her daughter shortly after she filed a complaint.

Petro also denounced that someone from the United States approached the mother and tried to trick her into signing documents in English backing from the accusations (link).

Red de Refugios

Segundo Encuentro Interamericano 2009

The Drum Beat - Issue 505 -

Storytelling

===

This issue of The Drum Beat focuses on stories, asking: what do we mean by the use of oral history, or storytelling, in the context of social change? What is the rationale behind its use as a communication strategy, and how has it been used in diverse contexts around the world to address a myriad of development issues? How do new technologies influence the telling of traditional tales, and what does the relatively new approach called "digital storytelling" look like in practice? We also feature several tools from our Materials section designed to support the work of those integrating stories into their work and thinking, as well as a few evaluations assessing the storytelling strategy.

This issue includes:

* Voices from those in TRANSITION or CONFLICT.
* More from Africa: SOUL BEAT on Power of Personal Narrative.
* Stories in EDUCATIONAL contexts.
* POLL on newspapers and democracy: relationship?
* DIGITAL tales.
* Selected storytelling RESOURCES.
* EVALUATING storytelling strategies.

ASIA: Marriage no safe haven for women

Ninety percent of women living with HIV in Asia are thought to have acquired it from their long-term partners

BALI, 12 August 2009 (PlusNews) - An estimated 50 million women in Asia are at risk of contracting HIV from male partners who engage in risky sexual behaviours, says a new UNAIDS report released at the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Bali, Indonesia, this week.

The report, HIV Transmission in Intimate Partner Relationships in Asia, cites evidence from several Asian countries indicating that most women are acquiring HIV as a result of their partner's sexual behaviour, not their own: of the 1.7 million women living with HIV in Asia, more than 90 percent are thought to have acquired the virus from their husbands or long-term boyfriends.

Life and Death and Child Health Reform

by Marian Wright Edelman

As a child, Devante Johnson's future seemed to be full of promise. He made excellent grades in school and was a help around the house. His mother, Tamika Scott, worked hard, managing to raise three boys while pursuing a career, buying a house and completing a college degree. Mrs. Scott had a 401(k) retirement fund and private health insurance and was confident she was prepared for unforeseen emergencies. At 29, she took comfort in the belief that her family was secure.
