Sweden - Against Prostitution & Trafficking for Sexual Purposes -Action Plan

AGAINST PROSTITUTION AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING FOR SEXUAL PURPOSES
In July 2008, the Swedish Government adopted an action plan for combating prostitution in Sweden and human trafficking for sexual purposes. Altogether, SEK 203 million will be invested in 36 measures up to the year 2010. The Government Action Plan covers five priority areas:
a.. Greater protection and support for those at risk
b.. More emphasis on preventive work
c.. Higher standards and greater efficiency in the justice system
d.. Increased national and international cooperation
e.. Greater knowledge and awareness

El IIDH recibirá expresiones de interés para la elaboración de módulos
autoformativos*

En el marco del *Programa Acceso Ciudadano a la Justicia Laboral en
Centroamérica y República Dominicana,* el Instituto Interamericano de
Derechos Humanos recibirá hojas de vida de las personas interesadas en la
elaboración de seis manuales autoformativos en derechos humanos y
laborales, para cada uno de los siguientes países: Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y República Dominicana. Se contratará una
persona consultora para cada país.
Los materiales tendrán como propósito contribuir al fortalecimiento de las
capacidades de acceso a la justicia laboral de las organizaciones de la
sociedad civil en la región y las entidades proveedoras de asistencia legal
gratuita que trabajan en este campo, así como de las trabajadoras,
trabajadores y personas interesadas en profundizar sus conocimientos sobre
legislación laboral y derechos humanos.

- Se recibirán hojas de vida del jueves 19 al viernes 27 de noviembre de
2009.
- Los contratos de las consultorías estarán vigentes del 1o. de diciembre

350 Teenage Girls To Face The Knife
A pre-initiation ceremony known as kitung'a will take place in Kapsiren village, Koibirir location, on the Friday that schools are to close. A source from the provincial administration and several primary school teachers told the Nation at Tot trading centre on Tuesday that according to cultural beliefs, the stars, prevailing weather patterns, and other key elements had signalled that the initiations should go on in the next two weeks.
About 120 girls aged between nine and 16 years are to undergo the rite in Endow, Kaben, and Koibirir locations while 60 others are targeted in Cheptulel in Marakwet. In the neighbouring Lomut and Arpolo sub-locations in Pokot Central, more than 150 girls will undergo the cut.

Ministra León instó a luchar por derogatoria del Código Penal
Caracas, 26 Nov. ABN.- Los artículos que penalizan el aborto en el Código Penal carecen de valor legal porque fueron derogados luego de aprobarse la Constitución de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela, advirtió este jueves ministra del Poder Popular para la Mujer e Igualdad de Género, María León.
'No es el aborto el que está penalizado sino el Código Penal porque entra en contradicción con la Carta Magna', dijo en el programa La Voz de la Defensoría que se transmite por Radio Nacional de Venezuela (RNV).
Manifestó que lo ideal es luchar por la derogatoria de ese instrumento legal y no por la despenalización del aborto.
'Esta es una pelea que ganamos en 1999; sin embargo, las mujeres siguen levantando esta consigna. Tenemos que hacer que se cumpla', aseveró.
Recordó que durante la gestión del ex ministro de Salud Roger Capella fue aprobada una norma sobre salud sexual y reproductiva que contempla la atención desde la infancia hasta la madurez, la cual además está relacionada con el aborto y las consecuencias que puede causar la interrupción del embarazo.
Por lo tanto, instó a las mujeres a apropiarse del referido instrumento.
Igualmente, propuso un nuevo Código Penal y aplicar la norma de salud sexual y reproductiva “para que se acabe este problema tan serio con el aborto” .

Con motivo de la celebración mañana del Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la violencia contra las mujeres, Centella ha abogado por erradicar las causas de la prostitución, al considerar que la compra del cuerpo de una mujer es una de las manifestaciones más violentas del patriarcado.

DUBLIN — Roman Catholic Church leaders in Dublin spent decades sheltering child-abusing priests from the law and most fellow clerics turned a blind eye, an investigation ordered by Ireland's government concluded Thursday.

Taiwan Should Stop Legalization of Prostitution
On November 25th, the 10th International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Garden of Hope Foundation in Taiwan and Taiwan Anti-Sexual Exploitation Alliance together with local and international allies around the world express our deep concern regarding the recent proposal to legalize prostitution, a form of violence against women, by the government of Taiwan. Five international and national women’s organizations from Canada, Korea, UK and US will speak in full support of Taiwanese women’s opposition to legalization of prostitution in Taiwan in the November 25th press conference in Taipei, Taiwan.
In 2009, the Taiwan court has ruled that the existent regulation on punishing prostituted women is against the principle of equality and should become ineffective in two years. While welcoming the decriminalization of prostituted women, the impact of this ruling has misled the Taiwan government toward the establishment of the sex trade district and legalization of sex industry that are completely against women’s human rights. We believe that the Taiwan government has made a critical error by failing to recognize the highly unequal relationship that exists between men and women within prostitution.

Liberia: India’s all-female UN police unit serves as inspiration
20 November 2009 – Liberian girls and women should draw inspiration from the all-female Indian police unit serving with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to join law enforcement agencies in the service of their own nation, the top UN official in the West African country said today.
“I hope the inspiration that you have provided Liberian girls and women will be among the many lasting impressions of your work here in Liberia, and your work here will leave a positive legacy in the rule of law sector,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative Ellen Margrethe Løj declared as she decorated 125 Indian women peacekeepers.
She praised the women for their important outreach programmes with basic self-defence training and computer classes, helping Liberian women to develop their capacities and practical skills and empowering them to improve their lives.
“Your medical outreach and awareness campaigns to promote proper hygiene and sanitation have touched the lives of many community members in Congo Town; you have adopted the pupils of Hebron Orphanage and Victory Chapel School, and you have positively changed their lives,” she said, mentioning some of the initiatives.
Ms. Løj praised India for being the first country to send an all-female police unit to a UN peacekeeping mission, citing a Security Council resolution recognizing that “armed conflicts often affect women and girls most severely, and so it mandates that women should play a more active role in peacekeeping efforts.”
Quoting Indian non-violence leader Mahatma Gandhi, who said, ‘be the change that you want to see in the world,’ she reminded all UNMIL peacekeepers to display the utmost professionalism in their work.
“Our behaviour must be a demonstration of our commitment to upholding the essential qualities of trust and respect in our daily interactions with our Liberian brothers and sisters,” she stressed.
UNMIL, set up by the Security Council in 2003, now numbers over 11,500 uniformed personnel and played a major role in restoring stability and a democratic government after more than a decade of civil war. But in a report to the Security Council in August, Mr. Ban warned that the gains remain fragile, especially with regard to security, rule of law and job creation.

La propia autoridad promueve la impunidad con la que operan alrededor de 9 mil giros negros donde se explota a este sector.
México.- En estos momentos, alrededor de 300 niñas menores de edad, traídas con engaños y robadas de los estados de Oaxaca, Puebla y Tlaxcala estarían siendo prostituidas en diferentes puntos de la capital del país; “de seis de la tarde a seis de la mañana, ese número se dobla”, principalmente en la calle San Pablo, por el rumbo de La Merced.
La denuncia la hace el coordinador de Brigada Callejera de Apoyo a la Mujer Elisa Martínez AC, Jaime Montejo, quien acusa que las bandas de tratantes de mujeres es solapada por la impunidad que promueven las propias autoridades.
Ese número es mínimo y es real. De acuerdo con cifras de la delegación Cuauhtémoc, en ésta estarían funcionando casi 9 mil giros negros; “según nuestros cálculos, en cada uno de éstos laboran diez mujeres en el trabajo sexual y, de todas éstas, un número importante lo integran menores de edad y mujeres extranjeras”, señala.

Colombia: Violencia sexual en el conflicto armado sin un sólo fallo condenatorio

Víctimas sexuales de la guerra interna aún esperan justicia.
Bogotá, octubre (Especial de SEMlac).- A más de un año de la sentencia de la Corte Constitucional que ordena al Estado investigar los casos de violencia sexual cometidos en el marco del conflicto armado que vive Colombia y desarrollar una política pública para las colombianas desplazadas, no hay un sólo fallo condenatorio y los programas están muy retrasados.
"Toca hacer acciones de tutela (medida legal para defender derechos) para que le den a una la ayuda humanitaria, y cuando una gestiona algo (para la comunidad desplazada) la vuelven a amenazar (los grupos armados). Yo tengo un año de estar en Bogotá, y sólo me han dado un avantel (radio-teléfono), pero eso no sirve para parar las balas. Y a las que hemos sido violadas, nos toca contar la historia varias veces, hasta el vigilante de las oficinas públicas tiene que saber que una fue violada
