Dear Feminist Activist,

A true hero for women's rights and lives was murdered today. Dr. George Tiller, who endured countless threats, an assassination attempt, bombings and assaults on his clinic, and many legal challenges by anti-abortion extremists was murdered in his church by such an extremist today. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/140 0/t/900/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY= 1049

I am greatly saddened by his death and by the loss of a friend to me and countless women, but I am also outraged that this could have happened again. I and the Feminist Majority Foundation had the privilege of knowing and working with Dr. Tiller over the last two decades. He was a courageous, unassuming, and soft-spoken man who cared deeply about his patients and about women's rights and lives. He knew his life was in danger, but continued to provide vitally needed healthcare services to women when few others would.

Dr. Tiller expected no accolades - he was doing what he knew was right and medically needed. However, he deeply appreciated the gratitude he received from his patients and pro-choice supporters nationwide. I am glad so many of us had the opportunity to thank him -- He deserved it.

Many of you have heard from us before about Dr. Tiller and his dedicated and courageous staff. Many of you have responded to our appeals and have sent kind messages of support to him and his clinic staff.

Today his family, clinic, and staff need our love and support. salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1400/t/900/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1049

I know you want to send his family and clinic health workers your sympathy and gratitude for his work. We will facilitate this my forwarding your messages.

In Solidarity,

Ellie Smeal
President

P.S. In Dr. Tiller's memory, you can be sure we are working to protect other physicians and healthcare workers that have been targeted. We will continue to do all we can to keep clinics open, accessible, and doctors and women's healthcare workers safe. We will never forget the courageous healthcare providers who are on the frontlines of the struggle for women's rights and lives.

Will Obama Call the Murder of George Tiller What it is–Terrorism?
Posted on May 31, 2009 by bostonboomer

George Tiller, 67, a Witchita, KS doctor who performed abortions was shot dead inside his Lutheran church this morning during the service. His wife was in the choir at the time. This is terrorism, and it is evil. Dr. Tiller was targeted as part of a concerted effort to intimdate women who need and seek abortions and the doctors who help them. May he rest in peace.

No Mercy
by Mary Mapes

I felt just sick today when I saw the bulletin about the murder of Dr. George Tiller.

Sicker still when I saw the "sympathy" letter issued by officials at Operation Rescue, the virulent anti-abortion organization that dogged this poor man for the past two decades. The statement said, "We pray for Mr. Tiller's family."

They had better say a few prayers for their own souls. They had better pray for forgiveness for relentlessly working to make this man a target.

Operation Rescue's Web site said the organization was "shocked" by the murder.

Well, I'm not.

George Tiller shot to death at Wichita church

WICHITA - George Tiller, the Wichita doctor who became a national lightning rod in the debate over abortion, was shot to death this morning as he walked into church services.

Tiller was shot just after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation. Witnesses and a police source confirmed Tiller was the victim.

No information has been released about whether a suspect is in custody.

Homicide detectives and Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston have arrived at the church.

Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were being kept inside the church by police, and those arriving were being ushered into the parking lot. Witnesses are being transported downtown for interviews and other members of the congregation are slowly being released from inside the sanctuary.

Tiller has long been a focal point of protest by abortion opponents because his clinic, Women's Health Care Services at 5701 E. Kellogg, is one of the few in the country where late-term abortions are performed.

Protesters blockaded Tiller's clinic during Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" protests during the summer of 1991, and Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at his clinic in 1993.

Tiller was wounded in both arms, and Shannon remains in prison for the shooting.

Tiller's clinic was severely vandalized earlier this month. According to the Associated Press, his lawyer said wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut and that the vandals also cut through the roof and plugged the buildings' downspouts. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic. Tiller reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident.

Tiller and his clinic have faced continuous threats and lawsuits. A Wichita jury ruled in March that he was not guilty of illegal abortion on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an "independent" second physician's concurring opinion before performing later term abortions. Immediately following the ruling in this criminal case, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts made public a similar complaint against Tiller that was originally filed in December 2008. Tiller's medical license could eventually be suspended or revoked by the board on the basis of the complaint.

Abortion Hotline Launched in Chile

A hotline that will give Chilean women information they need to self-terminate a pregnancy was launched yesterday by a network of feminist organizations. According to Women on Waves, the hotline will give women information about Misoprostol, a drug available in Chile by prescription to treat gastric ulcers, to safely and effectively induce abortion.

Supporters at the hotline's launching, chanted "Contraception - so we don't need abortions. Safe abortions - so we don't die," reported the Valparaiso Times. Spokesperson Gloria Maira of the Women's Health Network of Chile said "We consider the right to a safe abortion a health issue."

Abortion has been illegal in Chile since 1989. There are no exceptions in the law to account for rape, incest, or the life and health of the woman. Despite this, Chile has one of the highest abortion rates in Latin America, with about a third of pregnancies ending in abortion. Hundreds of women die each year from botched abortions in the country.

Asia Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15
22-24 October 2009
Miriam College, Quezon City, Philippines

Sisters in Asia and the Pacific,

I am pleased to accept my nomination as Convener of the Asia Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15, which will be held on 22-24 October 2009 at Miriam College, Quezon City, Philippines. I thank the Asia Pacific Women?s Watch (APWW), the Forum organizers, for entrusting to me the challenging and exciting task of bringing together women from Asia and the Pacific and beyond to once again take stock of the situation of women and craft responses to overcome persistent and emerging threats to the realization of commitments made in Beijing.

It has been 15 years since the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in September 1995, a period equal to half a generation. How much has our world changed? Are women?s lives significantly better? Is quality education within reach of all girls and boys? Do women and men now regard each other as equals? Do women view politics as a genuine career option rather than as an exclusive domain for wealthy men and their clans? Do women and their children feel safe and secure in their own homes and communities? There are many issues indeed.

As Chairperson of the UN Commission on the Status of Women from 1994 ? 1996, I presided over countless discussions and negotiations over the draft document that we now call the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. These sessions at the Prepcom in New York and at the Main Committee at the Conference in Beijing were often difficult and contentious but in the end all UN member states reached consensus on necessary Action for Equality, Development and Peace.

How much progress has 15 years brought? How much of this can we attribute to NGO action? What are our new analyses and insights and commitments that may further enrich and extend the Platform?s vision and spirit?

Friends in Asia and the Pacific, you are invited to participate in this meeting among NGOs and women?s movements and networks to prepare for the United Nations 15th year review of the Beijing Platform for Action. All are welcome: activists and academics, professionals and politicians, community workers and policy advocates, young and elderly, grassroots women, human rights defenders, the LGBT community, men---everyone. The only required qualification is that you affirm the Beijing Platform for Action and subscribe to the UN Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

The theme of the NGO Forum is ?Sharing Wisdom, Confronting Crises, Forging the Future?, highlighting the important contributions of women?s organizations and networks and feminist movements in meeting the strategic objectives of the Beijing Platform for Action in all 12 of its critical areas of concern and in creating a better future.

The venue of the Asia Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15 is Miriam College in the Philippines. Miriam College, of which I am president, is an educational institution for women, aggressively committed to gender equality and the empowerment of women. I look forward to welcoming you to our campus.

For information on the Forum, please visit the APWW website http://apww.isiswomen.org/. We will be posting information on the program, registration procedures, etc. as these become available.

Mabuhay and welcome to the Philippines!

Sincerely yours,

Patricia B. Licuanan Ph.D.
Convenor
Asia Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15

Mobilizing for Reproductive Justice
by Loretta J. Ross

I’m not a policy wonk. I am very ill suited to talk frequently to legislators to ask them to do the very jobs they were elected to do and for which they already get paid. From that admittedly jaded perspective, I’m not anyone’s first choice to do lobbying or “education” of elected officials.

Nevertheless, I think it’s important for reproductive justice activists to have a serious discussion -- immediately -- about public policies, reproductive justice and President Obama’s Administration.

Reproductive justice is built on the foundation of human rights. The framework of “reproductive justice” requires that the most vulnerable populations be kept in the center of our lens, not at the margins. This means that we may have to work hard and quickly to create a public policy platform worthy of and capable of doing justice to the reproductive justice framework.

(Bill) Clinton's modest proposal
By Adam Lashinsky, Julie Schlosser and Todd Woody

The 42nd president sees female power as one solution to climate change.

While politicians bicker over cap-and-trade legislation, Bill Clinton is looking to the empowerment of women as a weapon for fighting global warming. "In every single society in which that has happened, there's been a moderation in population growth," said Clinton. Because population growth is seen as a major contributor to rising levels of greenhouse gas, Clinton believes that putting girls in school and giving them access to microcredit, capital, and labor markets will temper both the birth rate and climate change. "We need to find a morally acceptable way to slow down the population explosion in the countries that can't take care of the people they've got now."

MEXICO: Avalanche of Anti-Abortion Laws
By Diego Cevallos

MEXICO CITY, May 22 (IPS) - In the last 13 months, 12 of Mexico's 32 states have approved amendments to their state constitutions defining a fertilised human egg as a person with a right to legal protection, and seven other state parliaments are taking steps in the same direction.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) say it is a massive conservative reaction to a law decriminalising abortion up to 12 weeks' gestation that went into force in the Mexican capital in April 2007.

The law was upheld in August 2008 by the Supreme Court, which ruled that it did not violate the Mexican constitution.

Behind the wave of reforms of state constitutions, according to critics, is a pact between the hierarchy of the Mexican Catholic Church and the leadership of the most traditional political parties to curb social movements advocating the legalisation of abortion.

"I have no direct evidence, but we have repeatedly heard allegations" that such a pact exists, María Mejía, head of Catholics for the Right to Decide (CDD), told IPS.

According to María Luisa Sánchez, director of the Information Group on Reproductive Choice (GIRE), what is happening is a kind of "revenge" on the part of conservative groups. "These reforms are absurd and put women at risk," she told IPS.

Adolescencia (Codeni).

Supreme Court Decision Pretends Pregnancy Discrimination Doesn't Harm Women
By Kay Steiger, RH Reality Check

May 27, 2009

Few things underscore the Supreme Court's lack of diversity more than the recent ruling in a pregnancy discrimination case, AT&T Corp. v. Hulteen. The case examined the pension payments for a number of former female employees of AT&T who had taken maternity leave before passage of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which clarified that under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act pregnancy discrimination counted as sex discrimination. Now, AT&T is defining unpaid maternity of these employees as personal leave from the company. And the court has now ruled that such personal leave doesn't and shouldn't count toward these women's pensions. Justice David Souter, who recently announced his retirement from the court and has generally been thought of as favorable toward women's rights, wrote the opinion.

"This was not one of Justice Souter's finest moments," said Harper Jean Tobin, a staff attorney for the Herbert Semmel Federal Rights Project of the National Senior Citizens Law Center and has written about the case for the American Constitution Society's blog. "Hulteen is a bad decision and has a significant impact on a large number of workers. At the same time it's a narrow decision." Tobin estimates that the ruling only affects the roughly 15,000 women who worked at AT&T and took maternity leave before the PDA was put into place.

But Marcia McCormick, a law professor at the Cumberland School of Law and a contributor to Workplace Prof Blog, estimates this ruling might have a more sinister impact on constitutional law. One of the most disturbing things is that it seems to suggest that pregnancy discrimination is not sex discrimination. That determination could have vast and reaching impacts on women in this country.

NARAL Cautious on Sotomayor

Nancy Keenan of NARAL has issued a congratulatory non-endorsement of President Obama's choice for the Supreme Court:

"President Obama has selected a nominee with a distinguished record of professional accomplishments as a judge, prosecutor, and community leader. This impressive personal biography signals that she possesses an understanding of how the law affects everyday people's lives," Keenan said.

"We are encouraged by the strong support she receives from her peers and other legal scholars and the fact that the Senate has twice confirmed her for federal judgeships. We look forward to learning more about Judge Sotomayor's views on the right to privacy and the landmark Roe v. Wade decision as the Senate's hearing process moves forward."

BOOK

Dangerous Exits

Escaping Abusive Relationships in Rural America

Walter S. DeKeseredy and Martin D. Schwartz

Foreword by Joseph F. Donnermeyer

“This book deserves a special place among the panoply of new scholarship on rural crime. Innovative and multi-dimensional, Dangerous Exits sounds a powerful call for action and policy change.”

— from the foreword by Joseph F. Donnermeyer

Decade after decade, violence against women has gained more attention from scholars, policy makers, and the general public. Social scientists in particular have contributedsignificant empirical and theoretical understandings to this issue.

Strikingly, scant attention has focused on the victimization of women who want to leave their hostile partners. This groundbreaking work challenges the perception that rural communities are safe havens from the brutality of urban living. Identifying hidden crimes of economic blackmail and psychological mistreatment, and the complex relationship between patriarchy and abuse, Walter S. DeKeseredy and Martin D. Schwartz propose concrete and effective solutions, giving voice to women who have often suffered in silence.

Walter S. DeKeseredy is a professor of criminology, justice, and policy studies at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. He is the recipient of the Linda Saltzman Memorial Intimate Partner Violence Researcher Award from the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT).

Martin Schwartz is a professor of sociology at Ohio University

THIS MEMORIAL DAY,
REMEMBER THE MOTHERS

Did you know...that the United States ranks behind at least 40 other nations in maternal mortality rates according to the World Health Organization. In 2005, the United States reported 15.1 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, up from 7.5 per 100,000 in 1982.

Did you know...that black women in the United States have 4 times the risk of dying from childbirth or childbirth related complications. Hispanic women in the United States, similarly, are 1.6 times more likely than non-Hispanic white women to die from pregnancy-related causes.

Did you know…that the Centers for Disease Control estimated in 1998 that the US maternal death rate is actually 1.3 to three times that reported in vital statistics records because of underreporting of such deaths.

Did you know…that reporting of maternal deaths in the United States is done via an honor system. There are no statutes providing for penalties for misreporting or failing to report maternal deaths.

Did you know…that the Centers for Disease Control estimates that more than half of the reported maternal deaths in the United States could have been prevented by early diagnosis and treatment.
