Female Bangladeshi Forces Carry Hope to Haiti
By Amy Lieberman
WeNews correspondent
A female U.N. police force from Bangladesh is bringing hope of better protection to Haitian women in makeshift camps for those displaced by the earthquake. Women's activists in one camp say it's not enough. They need help urgently.
UNITED NATIONS (WOMENSENEWS)--Marie Eramithe Delva's 17-year-old daughter narrowly escaped a rape attempt in one of Haiti's largest internally displaced persons camps at the beginning of March. The 42-year-old mother and grassroots activist tried to report the assault and the attacker's subsequent threats.
A police officer just laughed and told her it was the problem of René Préval, president of the country that on Jan. 12 suffered an earthquake that killed approximately 230,000 people and left upwards of 1.3 million homeless.
"They did nothing," Delva told Women's eNews in a phone interview, assisted by a Creole translator from the camp Champ-de-Mars, in Port-au-Prince, home to roughly 50,000 people. "The only help we found came from members of the camp."

Tráfico (in)humano

Yeardley Love Memorial: Thousands Flock To Vigil, George Huguely In Lockdown (NEWS, VIDEO)
Thousands gathered at the University of Virginia last night to commemorate slain lacrosse player Yeardley Love and share in their grief over the senior's violent death, allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend George Huguely.
UVA President John Casteen told students they should be 'outraged.' He encouraged students to support each other and to speak out if they are in abusive relationships.
Meanwhile, editorials and theories about the murder and domestic violence on college campuses emerge across the internet. In a piece on AOL News, UVA graduate Mary Beth Lineberry wrote that "Love's death ... exposes an unfortunate reality of college life that's often obscured or silenced in communities, university and otherwise, nationwide

Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on the
Violence Against Women Act
May 5, 2010

226 Dirksen S.O.B.
Fully Fund VAWA!
The Senate Committee on the Judiciary has scheduled a public hearing on "The Increased Importance of the Violence Against Women Act in a Time of Economic Crisis" for Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Click here for more information.
~~~~~
1 in 4 women in the United States will experience domestic violence during her lifetime.
1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape.
In a 12-month period, 3.4 million adults were victims of stalking.
Girls and young women between the ages of 16-24 experience the highest rate of partner violence.
~~~~~
Domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking are crimes of epidemic proportions that impact millions of families and individuals each year in every community across our nation. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was enacted in 1994 to address the safety and stability of individuals who have been or are at risk of being victims of one of these four crimes.
Since VAWA first passed, it has saved billions in net averted social costs and States have passed more than 600 laws to combat the crimes. The services provided through VAWA have helped to save and rebuild millions of lives. But, there is much more to be done!
Recent state budget cuts and a decline in private and corporate giving as a result of the economic crisis have forced many providers of critical VAWA services to reduce their services or close down altogether. This has left some communities with nowhere to turn in an emergency. We must ensure that VAWA programs thrive so that victims of violence can survive.
The next VAWA is currently being drafted by the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence in preparation for introduction and passage in 2011.
Join us in our efforts to make every home a safe home.
1. Attend the hearing tomorrow. It is important that proponents of violence against women programs have a presence on Capitol Hill. There is strength in numbers! If you cannot attend the hearing, you can watch it live.
2. Contact your Members of Congress and ask them to attend the hearing and to support the reauthorization and full funding of violence against women programs. Call your Representative and Senators, or the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.
3. Respond to this email with your name, organization, physical address and email address to receive updates and alerts, and to join our efforts to pass VAWA.

Women Punished Twice Over in Colombia's Prisons
"Loss of freedom should not mean loss of fundamental rights," Diana Sánchez, a lawyer with the Political Prisoners Solidarity Committee (CSPP), told IPS. "But in Colombia prisoners are punished twice over: with a prison sentence, and with restrictions on their other rights."
Women prisoners in Colombia face poor medical care and hygiene conditions, overcrowding, harassment by male guards, mistreatment and abuses at the hands of staff, and lack of privacy during conjugal visits, according to complaints filed with state oversight agencies. In addition, they are often transferred to prisons far from their homes and families.
The same kinds of abuses are faced by women inmates whether they are common prisoners or political prisoners in this civil war-torn country, human rights organisations report.
To address the situation, the CSPP and other local human rights groups are organising a campaign for the Rights and Dignity of Women Prisoners in Colombia, to be launched in June.
The organisers of the campaign argue that "being deprived of freedom does not mean the same thing for men and women, because…women carry the weight of being judged by a moralistic society that reproaches them for violating the idea of the submissive woman who is the caretaker of order, values and the family."

ABORTION HAS BECOME MORE CONCENTRATED
AMONG POOR WOMEN
Rising Poverty, Economic Recession May Be Factors
The proportion of abortion patients who were poor increased by almost 60%—from 27% in 2000 to 42% in 2008, according to “Characteristics of U.S. Abortion Patients, 2008,” by Rachel K. Jones, Lawrence B. Finer and Susheela Singh of the Guttmacher Institute. This shift is the most striking change in the profile of women obtaining abortions.

Honduras

PAKISTAN - AFTER THE RAPE: THE MUKHTAR MAI STORY - MOVIE
A film by Catherine Ulmer
Netherlands/Pakistan, 2008, 58 minutes, Color, DVD
Order No. W10990
In 2002, Mukhtar Mai, a rural Pakistani woman from a remote part of the Punjab, was gang-raped by order of her tribal council as punishment for her younger brother’s alleged relationship with a woman from another clan. Instead of committing suicide or living in shame, Mukhtar spoke out, fighting for justice in the Pakistani courts—making world headlines. Further defying custom, she started two schools for girls in her village and a crisis center for abused women. Mukhtar, who had never learned to read but knew the Koran by heart, realized that only a change in mentality could break brutal, archaic traditions and social codes. Her story, included in the bestseller “Half the Sky” by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, and the subject of Mukhtar’s own memoir, “In the Name of Honor”, has inspired women across the globe.
Revealing the progress and fruits of Mukhtar’s labor, this powerful documentary tracks the school’s profound impact on the girls and families of Meerwala and shows how the crisis center empowers women seeking its help. An important look inside Pakistan, where the impact of Islamic fundamentalism is revealed and how women are fighting its oppressive and violent impact.

Afghan feminists fighting from under the burqa
Feminists in Afghanistan are forced to operate as underground movement, often using the burqa as a convenient disguise
Jon Boone in Kabul guardian.co.uk,
As a committed feminist, there are few symbols of women's oppression that Parween hates more than the burqa.
But compromises are necessary in a country where fighting for women's rights can be a controversial and dangerous business, and she is not above donning the all-concealing garment if it helps her to stay one step ahead of the authorities.
