Urge Congress to Stop Child Marriage

There are an estimated 60 million child brides worldwide, some as young as 7 years old.

If the present trend continues, another 100 million girls will be forced into marriage over the next decade.

But right now, Congress is considering a bill that would give the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) more power to work with countries around the world to fight child marriage - and it's up to us to make sure it passes.

Send a letter to your members of Congress and ask them to take a stand against child marriage >>

Child marriage is a direct violation of children's rights. That is reason enough to fight against it. But forced marriage is especially dangerous for girls, and the consequences are severe:

Child brides are often forced to marry much older men and are pressured to bear children as soon as possible. They face risks like increased rates of HIV infection and complications from giving birth before their own bodies have developed fully.

Married girls may be at greater risk of gender-based violence than women who marry later in life, and often have little decision-making power in their husband's home.
Married girls are more likely to have less education and fewer schooling opportunities than unmarried girls, thereby jeopardizing future income-generating opportunities.
The bill currently before Congress that aims to fight this practice, called The International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act, needs our support.

Please tell Congress to protect girls from child marriage by supporting this critical bill today

Indian women peacekeepers hailed in Liberia

(CNN) -- They are trained in sophisticated combat tactics and weaponry, crowd and mob control, counter-insurgency. They patrol the streets of the Liberian capital, expected to keep the peace after years of war.

Most of them are also mothers and form an all-women unit from India, policing in a country where a 15-year conflict was characterized by sexual violence. Rape, according to the United Nations, remains the No. 1 crime reported to police in Liberia.

The Indian women were pioneers, the unit's experience in Liberia an experiment of sorts for the United Nations.

Clare Hutchinson, a gender affairs officer at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York, said it was hoped that the Indian women would win the trust of Liberian women and perhaps serve as role models.

"It's about empowerment," she said. "It's quite a success story for us."

Indian policewomen first arrived in Liberia in 2007, and a fresh batch arrived a few days ago in Monrovia as part of the rotation. Annie Abraham, commander of the outgoing Indian unit, said she is proud of the Indian women's performance.

The message that the Indians brought was clear: You can trust us. And you can do anything a man can do. Even better.

LATIN AMERICA: Women's Rights Laws - Where's the Enforcement?
By Humberto Márquez *

CARACAS, Mar 5, 2010 (IPS/TerraViva) - Advanced new legislation and constitutional reforms on women's rights are paving the way for equal opportunities for women in Latin America and the Caribbean. But application and enforcement remain a distant goal.

That gap between paper promises and reality has a very real impact on the daily lives of millions of women in this region, where "poverty has a woman's face," in the words of Laura Chinchilla, who is about to become the first female president of Costa Rica.

To highlight the importance of creating laws and institutions to bolster gender equity, the theme of International Women's Day, Mar. 8, this year is "Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All", because "while gender-sensitive legislation and policies have addressed inequalities and discrimination against women, overall progress remains uneven," according to the United Nations.

Rape victims worldwide denied justice and dignity

Amnesty International Press release
8 March 2010

Victims of rape and sexual violence worldwide are denied access to justice due to gender discrimination and assumptions about the sexual behaviour of victims of rape, Amnesty International said in two regional reports released on Monday.

To mark International Women's Day, Amnesty International released two reports looking at sexual violence in locations across the developed and developing world; specifically Cambodia and the Nordic Countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

"In poor and rich countries alike, women who are raped or abused have little chance of seeing their attackers brought to justice," said Widney Brown, Senior Director of International Law and Policy at Amnesty International. "It is shocking that in the 21st century with so much legislation designed to ensure women's equality, that virtually every government fails to protect women or to ensure that their abusers are held to account for their crimes."

my daughter is 22 years and 10 months old. She is a prostitute and is using a 16 year old girl to prostitute with her. I have reported it to the police but they don't seem to do anything about it. She uses craigslist and backpage to do her illegal activity. My daughter has a 3 year old girl that I am sure will be one of her many victims. What and how can I get my daughter to stop when cps and the police know it but wont do anything

I Am Nujood, Age 10, and Divorced

ABOUT THIS BOOK

“I’m a simple village girl who has always obeyed the orders of my father and brothers. Since forever, I have learned to say yes to everything. Today I have decided to say no.”

Forced by her father to marry a man three times her age, young Nujood Ali was sent away from her parents and beloved sisters and made to live with her husband and his family in an isolated village in rural Yemen. There she suffered daily from physical and emotional abuse by her mother-in-law and nightly at the rough hands of her spouse. Flouting his oath to wait to have sexual relations with Nujood until she was no longer a child, he took her virginity on their wedding night. She was only ten years old.

Unable to endure the pain and distress any longer, Nujood fled—not for home, but to the courthouse of the capital, paying for a taxi ride with a few precious coins of bread money. When a renowned Yemeni lawyer heard about the young victim, she took on Nujood’s case and fought the archaic system in a country where almost half the girls are married while still under the legal age. Since their unprecedented victory in April 2008, Nujood’s courageous defiance of both Yemeni customs and her own family has attracted a storm of international attention. Her story even incited change in Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries, where underage marriage laws are being increasingly enforced and other child brides have been granted divorces.

Recently honored alongside Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice as one of Glamour magazine’s women of the year, Nujood now tells her full story for the first time. As she guides us from the magical, fragrant streets of the Old City of Sana’a to the cement-block slums and rural villages of this ancient land, her unflinching look at an injustice suffered by all too many girls around the world is at once shocking, inspiring, and utterly unforgettable.

Divorced Before Puberty
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

It’s hard to imagine that there have been many younger divorcées — or braver ones — than a pint-size third grader named Nujood Ali.

Nujood is a Yemeni girl, and it’s no coincidence that Yemen abounds both in child brides and in terrorists (and now, thanks to Nujood, children who have been divorced). Societies that repress women tend to be prone to violence.

For Nujood, the nightmare began at age 10 when her family told her that she would be marrying a deliveryman in his 30s. Although Nujood’s mother was unhappy, she did not protest. “In our country it’s the men who give the orders, and the women who follow them,” Nujood writes in a powerful new autobiography just published in the United States this week, “I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced.”
