Peru’s Women, Victims of Machismo at Home and in Court
By Monica Martinez
LIMA – Preys of the machismo culture and domestic violence at home, Peruvian women also have to deal with a justice system that often justifies the behavior of the aggressor.
Last year – during which there was a 40-percent increase in cases of domestic violence compared with 2005 – there were 139 women slain and 64 injured, while in the first three months of this year, 29 women were murdered and attempts were made to kill another 17, according to figures from the Ministry of Women.
The average is “10 women slain per month. That figure fluctuates but it probably has a tendency to rise,” the legal counsel for the ministry’s National Program against Domestic and Sexual Violence, Marta Rivera, told Efe.

Could Yeardley Love’s Death Have Been Prevented By UVA’s Safety Tips?
On early Sunday morning, 22-year-old University of Virginia women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love was found dead in her apartment with “obvious physical injuries.” Hours later, 22-year-old men’s lacrosse player George Huguely was arrested and charged with first degree murder. Police didn’t release many details in the case, save that Love and Huguely “had been in a relationship at some point” and that further investigation would focus on questioning “teammates and friends about the nature of the relationship between Love and Huguely.”
All we know about Love’s death is that she was likely killed by someone close to her. So why are UVA police responding to the murder by warning students against crimes committed by strangers?

Obama and Calderón need to address press crisis in Mexico
New York, May 18, 2010—The Committee to Protect Journalists urges U.S. President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderón to put Mexico’s press freedom crisis on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting in Washington. CPJ also calls on Calderón to continue to advocate for reforms that will strengthen federal accountability in crimes against freedom of expression.
Calderón will spend two days in Washington to meet Obama and address a joint meeting of Congress.
A wave of unprecedented violence related to organized crime has markedly increased the last few years, despite a decision by Calderón to deploy more than 25,000 troops and federal police to fight drug trafficking. Media killings and disappearances have made Mexico one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the press, CPJ research shows.

Cannes Directors: 32 Years of Fame and Riches Is Punishment Enough for Polanski
by C.L. Minou
Bernard Henri-Lévy, France's premier defender of the rights of famous men to molest children, crowed recently in the Huffington Post about the latest iteration of his petition that somehow arresting a well-known international fugitive and convicted sex-offender is a monstrous injustice. Disappointingly, several of France's best known directors (Jean-Luc Goddard, Olivier Assayas, to name just two) once again happily signed on to the concept that justice doesn't apply to artists like Roman Polanski who can make movies of the caliber of The Ninth Gate. Or that raping 13-year old girls is one of the perks of winning an Oscar; their position isn't exactly clear.
They join a depressing list of celebrities who signed onto the first Roman Polanski petition. With relatively few exceptions (Greg Grunberg, who spoke out on his popular Twitter feed about Polanski; Emma Thompson, who withdrew her name; Michael Douglas, who refused to sign the new petition), the nominally liberal and progressive luminaries of the Hollywood elite, including actresses like Debra Winger, somehow believe that thirty years of "exile" in France (I should be so lucky), great wealth, and numerous accolades including the Palme d'Or and two Best Director Oscars is suitable punishment for raping a child.

Intimate Partner Violence and Maternal Depression During the Perinatal Period: A Longitudinal Investigation of Latinas
Michael A. Rodríguez et al
University of California, Los Angeles, mrodriguez@mednet.ucla.edu
This study assessed the course of perinatal depression among 210 Latinas who were and were not affected by intimate partner violence (IPV) and identified associated psychosocial factors. Peak depression prevalence occurred prenatally among 45.7% of IPV-exposed and 24.6% of non-IPV-exposed Latinas. At each assessment, depression was significantly higher for IPV-exposed compared to non-IPV-exposed mothers. Mastery and social support were associated with lower depression, whereas history of IPV, perceived stress, and avoidant coping behaviors were associated with higher depression. Findings support recommendations for routine depression and IPV screening of Latinas in perinatal clinical settings.

AFRICA
A Loud and Clear No to Violence Against Women
By Paula Fray
One in three African women are beaten or coerced into sex or otherwise abused in their lifetime: Africa UniTE is a fresh call to act to end this.
Credit:B.Wolff/UN
KEMPTON PARK, South Africa, May 12, 2010 (IPS) - Poet activist Myesha Jenkins’ voice reverberated through the hall: "Women are out in the night; we are cleaning the streets, some are walking the streets..."
Jenkins’s verse was echoed by fellow poets Zanele Faith Mavuso and Aura Zawanzaruwa who spoke of the pain of violence and the strength of women.
It was an unusual setting for the women poets performing their work: a May 11-12 gathering of government, civil society and U.N. agencies at a regional consultation for a Southern African strategy to support the Africa UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls.
The UNiTE to End Violence Against Women campaign, a multi-year effort aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls, was launched in 2008 by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. So far, the heads of states and ministers from 69 governments have added their names to the "Say NO" campaign.
Fresh commitment to act on pledges

Within the hell of war lies a private hell
Laura Carlsen,
It is easy to think of impunity as a sin of omission. The hand not raised in protest appears genteel alongside the hand stained with the blood of the victim. Yet we learned from the testimonies of women on the frontlines of battle for gender justice that impunity not only perpetuates crimes against women, it teaches generation after generation how to continue the practice. Laura Carlsen writes from the International Gender Justice Dialogue in Mexico.
Gender justice is an unfamiliar term to most people. Many assume it is merely a feminine (and therefore diminutive) form of justice, created by adding an awkward adjective to an abstract ideal. But thanks to years of documenting gender-based crimes, pressure from women’s movements, testimony from victims and legal arguments, there is now a body of jurisprudence and a history of movements that define gender justice and promote it internationally. At an historic conference in April, organized by the Women’s Initiative for Gender Justice and the Nobel Women’s Initiative, fifty women gathered in a Mexican beach town to evaluate the progress of gender justice and set forth a three-year work agenda.
