Children of Child Brides More Susceptible to Malnutrition, Study Finds

21/1/2010 - A recent study by a Boston University professor found that children born to mothers who were married and gave birth before they were 18 are more likely to be malnourished.

A study published in the British Medical Journal found that the rate of malnutrition among babies born to child brides is much higher than that of babies born to adult women.

The study was conducted by Boston University School of Public Health professor Dr. Anita Raj. Raj’s field of research includes gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health.

Out of 19 000 births included in Raj’s research, 13 000 were born to women under the age of 18. And, 67% of these babies manifested nutritional deficiencies. The implication of these results is that children born to women who are still children themselves are more likely to be underweight and stunted (meaning their physical growth has been retarded on account of a lack of adequate nutrition).

The report on Raj’s study goes on to contemplate that the reason for this trend is that the girls are marginalized in their marriages and cannot successfully petition their husbands for their children’s right to food.

my name is diana. on jan 2 of 2010 i was wrongfully arrested on a charge of domestic violence by officer xxx, of the desoto county sheriff's office in Hernando Mississippi. the perpetrator purposely put marks on himself, as an effort to have me arrested along with him. i strongly feel that what the police have done to me was injust and my rights as a victim to be protected were violated! the perpetrator also happens to be the son of one their fellow officers. i feel they did this to me out of hostility and maybe even out of loyalty for one of their own.

I was violently beaten up by my boyfriend over Xmas. It took me 3 weeks to muster up enough courage to go to the police department to get him arrested. I have many pictures of my injuries. After he got arrested he posted bail. Today I found out from the DA they decided not to press charges because there was NOT enough evidence. This man has beaten countless women. None of the women have come forward and it took every ounce of strength I had to stand up to him, and now they are going to dismiss the case. I feel like the DA totally dismissed what happened to me, even with the pictures and the way he attacked me. I don't understand it at all. The justice system has failed and it is just a matter of time until this man kills a girl. He almost killed me and this is way he laughs at the justice system because he can get away with this.

We Need YOU to Help PASS Hawaii’s 1st Human Trafficking State Law

We urgently need your help. Please take a few minutes to make these calls/faxes/emails to one or all of the people listed below. With your help, we can PASS Hawaii's first Human Trafficking state law and keep Hawaii safe.

Templates will soon be available on our website to submit testimony at legislative hearings BUT people can make calls, emails and faxes at any time, like NOW. You don't have to wait for a legislative hearing to have their voices heard. This year is an election year so your option as a registered voter (always good to remind them) is extra important!

FOR LEGISLATIVE HEARINGS: If you sign our mailing list or petition, we will alert you to when these hearings are held and how to submit testimony. We will only be give 48 hours notice, so please consider calling one or all of the key players below to urge them to support this bill NOW.

FOR CALLS AND FAXES TO URGE SUPPORT (YOU MAY DO THIS AT ANY TIME): Please be prepared to get the “runaround” from some of those listed below but if you do, do not give up. Remember, they work to serve the people of this state. And, your support can make a great difference in the lives of Human Trafficking Victims. Make sure your voice is heard! ACCEPT NO EXCUSE FOR STALLING ON THE HUMAN TRAFFICKING LAW. THEY HAVE NO GOOD EXCUSES. (Some may give you many without being specific. Be wary.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“Aloha, may I speak to (Person Listed Below)? Hello, my name is (Your Name) and I am a registered voter (optional). The Women's Legislative Caucus has submitted a bill making Human Trafficking a felony offense. I am urging you to support the Anti Human Trafficking Bill HB1940 and its Senate Companion SB2045. There is no excuse to wait on passing this legislation. Hawaii is now one of seven states without a state Human Trafficking Law. This is unacceptable. I support anyone in office who supports this bill. Thank you for your time.”

Below is a list of people to call. ALL ARE IMPORTANT!

E-mail: repkaramatsu@Capitol.hawaii.gov
The Human Trafficking Bill will be heard by his committee. He has voiced his support. It would be good to thank him.

Summary of This Year’s Human Trafficking Bill:
1. Creates the crime of Human Trafficking in the 1st Degree as a Class A offense, the highest penalty available in Hawaii, and sets varying degrees of offenses for trafficking related crimes. Human Trafficking for sexual exploitation in the 1st degree is based upon transportation (into, through within, or across state lines) plus intent to advance prostitution by any ONE of the NINE stated means in the definition of the offense (e.g. force, enticement, fraud, extortion, debt bondage, use of illicit substances, etc..). (Easy to prove transportation as we are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by 2000 miles of seawater on every side. The "intent to advance" language would exempt non-criminal forms of transportation from prosecution and would focus prosecution only on Human Traffickers and those that abet Human Traffickers).

2. Establishes a mandatory minimum sentence for the traffickers and patrons of trafficked children.

3. Focuses the criminalization on the traffickers and the patrons of Human Trafficking NOT on the victims. (Current prostitution statutes criminalize the victims by placing them in the same criminal category as patrons and advancers of prostitution).

4. Would allow victims to be legally recognized as victims of human trafficking and not as "prostitutes" or other criminals

5. Excuses the crime of Human Trafficking from Hawaii's "Deferred Acceptance" law which allows defendants, if pleading guilty, to receive a lighter sentence and to be able to legally say after the fact that they have not been convicted of any crime. Current prostitution statutes are not exempt from Deferred Acceptance.

6. Establishes the offense of Human Trafficking for the purposes of labor exploitation and set varying degrees of labor trafficking related offenses

7. Includes Human Trafficking in the state's Restitution and Forfeiture regulations as well as the Violent Crimes definitions.

Police errors left rapist John Worboys free to strike - but no officers face sack

• IPCC upholds complaints against five Met officers

• Fury from victims as none faces disciplinary action

Sandra Laville and Vikram Dodd The Guardian, Wednesday 20 January 2010

A serial sex attacker remained free to continue preying on women because police officers made serious mistakes during their investigations and failed to take victims seriously, the Independent Police Complaints Commission will rule today.

But the IPCC caused anger and dismay among campaigners by stopping short of recommending disciplinary hearings against those involved. It means that all the officers will remain in their jobs.

IPCC deputy chair: 'This is a wake-up call' Link to this audio
The IPCC identified "individual and systemic" issues within the Metropolitan police during its inquiry into John Worboys, a black-cab driver who remained at large to drug, rape and sexually assault at least 85 victims despite numerous women reporting attacks over many years. The commission upheld complaints against five out of eight Metropolitan Police officers, ranked constable, sergeant and inspector, recommending two should be given written warnings and three should receive words of advice. But there were no recommendations that any officers should face disciplinary hearings where the ultimate sanction would be dismissal.

Women's movement mourns death of 3 Haitian leaders
By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Three leaders in the Haitian women's movement are confirmed dead, victims of quake
They gave women voices, fought against violence and made rape in Haiti a crime
Friends, including Eve Ensler of "The Vagina Monologues," share memories
Amid chaos after earthquake, concerns rise about protecting women and girls
(CNN) -- One returned to her Haitian roots, to give voice to women, honor their stories and shape their futures.

Another urged women to pack a courtroom in Haiti, where she succeeded in getting a guilty verdict against a man who battered his wife.

A third joined the others and helped change the law to make rape, long a political weapon in Haiti, a punishable crime.

Myriam Merlet, Magalie Marcelin and Anne Marie Coriolan, founders of three of the country's most important advocacy organizations working on behalf of women and girls, are confirmed dead -- victims of last week's 7. earthquake.

Carta abierta a los gobiernos y a Naciones Unidas
19 Enero 2010

The Sexual Innocence Inference Theory: Fact or Fiction? A Spotlight on the Special Concurrence In the Court of Appeals of Idaho’s Recent Opinion in State v. Molen

You are a juror in the prosecution of a step-grandfather for lewd conduct with a minor, the minor being his eight or nine year old step-granddaughter, with whom he allegedly had genital-to-genital contact. The step-granddaughter has just testified to sexual molestation by her step-grandfather, including sexual intercourse, occurring on many occasions. Do you infer that the step-granddaughter could not possess the sexual knowledge that she possesses unless her step-granddaughter molested her?

According to the vast majority of courts, you do, and the widespread belief in this largely untested “sexual inference innocence theory” has led to the evisceration of the rape shield rule in many child molestation prosecutions. In his special concurrence in the recent opinion of the Court of Appeals of Idaho in State v. Molen, 2010 WL 90580 (Idaho.App. 2010), however, Judge David Gratton called into question this belief, and this post puts a spotlight on his opinion.
