En red contra el aborto inseguro
Un seminario sobre interrupción del embarazo con medicamentos congregó a varios cientos de médicos. Expertos de otros países explicaron la necesidad de promover su uso para bajar la mortalidad materna. El caso de Uruguay.

Medio millar de profesionales de la salud, la mayoría médicos generalistas, se anotaron para participar de un seminario sobre aborto con medicamentos, pero más de la mitad se quedó sin lugar porque la avalancha de inscriptos superó ampliamente la expectativa de los organizadores. El encuentro tuvo lugar en el auditorio del Centro Cultural de la Cooperación, cuya capacidad fue colmada por el gran interés que despertó la convocatoria. Durante la jornada se anunció la conformación de una red contra el aborto inseguro que promoverá, entre otras acciones, la difusión de información sobre el uso del misoprostol, un fármaco que se puede adquirir en las farmacias con receta y con el cual las mujeres pueden interrumpir voluntariamente un embarazo en sus casas durante las primeras 12 semanas de gestación, sin la presencia de un médico, en forma segura, según destacaron los expositores.

language interpretation services by professional, culturally competent
interpreters are critical to ensuring equal access to safety and justice.
Interpreters fulfill a critical duty: to provide individuals with limited
English proficiency or who are deaf, deaf-blind, or hard of hearing the same
level of access as English-speakers.
The Asian & Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence of the APIA
Health Forum established the Interpretation Technical Assistance & Resource
Center (ITARC) to inform the field and offer training and technical
assistance on interpretation and language access.
The result is the enclosed Resource Guide for Advocates & Attorneys on
Interpretation Services for Domestic Violence Victims, funded by the Office
on Violence Against Women, Grant No. 2004-WT-AX-K060. There are several
sections and Tip Sheets that address:

§ Knowledge, skills, abilities, and codes of conduct for interpreters,

Pronunciamiento público ante el femicidio de Jennifer Carolina y la indiferencia de las instituciones
Las personas que refrendamos este documento, individualidades, organizaciones sociales de Derechos Humanos y Redes Sociales, queremos expresar nuestro más profundo dolor y repudio ante el femicidio de Jennifer Carolina Vieira de Valero en manos de Edwin Valero, mejor conocido como el “Inca” Valero, quien se suicidó en la madrugada del 19 de abril. Durante un mes, aproximadamente, la sociedad venezolana, y sus Instituciones presenciaron indolentes, como esta mujer era víctima de una espiral de violencia que culminó la madrugada de este 18 de abril en tan horrendo crimen: fue asesinada por su condición de ser Mujer prácticamente frente a nuestros ojos. Ella fue dejada en manos del agresor, vulnerable y sin capacidad de gritar o defenderse, sola y por eso no pudo zafarse de quien sabía sería su verdugo y en eso tenemos que señalar de quiénes ha sido la responsabilidad ante esta tragedia que nos maltrata a todas y todos.
En este caso el Estado venezolano, una vez más, se muestra complaciente y tolerante ante la violencia doméstica contra las mujeres, por ineficacia de la acción judicial; esto ocurre en el marco de una flagrante violación a la “convención interamericana para prevenir, sancionar y erradicar la violencia contra la mujer “convención de belem do para” suscrita y adoptada por Venezuela en el año 1995. Recordemos que al ser Venezuela suscriptor de esta Convención se hace Estado parte de la misma y por lo tanto está obligado a aplicarla.

NOW Foundation Opposes Phony Parental Alienation Disorder
Over the years, hundreds of women have contacted National Organization for Women chapters looking for assistance in their efforts to protect minor children in family court custody proceedings. Often these women have been accused of a phony psychiatric condition, termed Parental Alienation Disorder (PAD). The "disorder" has been proposed by so-called father's rights (men's custody) activists to be added to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostics and Statistics Manual - V to give it more legitimacy than it currently has -- or should have -- in court.
This accusation is made by abusive ex-husbands and is intended to cause the courts to disregard mothers' claims of fathers' physical or sexual abuse in an effort to gain the fathers' full or joint custody. NOW Foundation is concerned that because of the alienation accusation known batterers and child abusers have been awarded custody; the numbers of cases involving dads in custody disputes abusing and murdering children is appalling. The notion of a parental alienation in custody disputes was advanced by the late Dr. Richard Gardner who committed suicide in 2003. The alienation accusation has been embraced by men's custody activists as an effective weapon to undermine mothers' bid for legal custody of minor children. Many advocates on behalf of mothers believe that batterers, child abusers and pedophiles populate these men's custody networks. There have been numerous instances of documented batterers and child abusers being awarded custody by biased family court judges.
NOW Foundation has sent a letter recently to the American Psychiatric Association noting that publications by the American Bar Association and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges have concluded proposed "alienation disorder" is inadmissible in court and has been discredited by the scientific community. Accordingly, family court judges, lawyers and other court personnel should take action against the use of the alienation accusation in cases before them. La experiencia de las mujeres con la violencia política es un tema a menudo descuidado en los criterios de la justicia transicional. Con demasiada frecuencia, los mandatos de la comisión de la verdad, las opiniones judiciales y las propuestas políticas de reparación y de reforma se han escrito, interpretado y aplicado sin tener en cuenta las distintas y complejas lesiones que las mujeres han sufrido. La negligencia de los patrones de abuso de género ha afectado a las mujeres y a los hombres en su acceso a la justicia. Cuando se limita el alcance de los programas de reparación y se afianza la impunidad, se distorsiona la historia, y se quebranta la legitimidad de las iniciativas de justicia transicional. Además, todavía hay muy poca comprensión de los legados del autoritarismo de género, de la compleja y cambiante relación entre violencia ordinaria y extraordinaria, así como de los desafíos y oportunidades presentes en los contextos de transición para mejorar la justicia de género.
Se han registrado algunos progresos notables a través de estrategias tales como audiencias temáticas de género en las comisiones de la verdad, la nueva jurisprudencia sobre los crímenes internacionales de género y la mayor atención a las mujeres víctimas en la formulación de programas de reparación. Sin embargo, estos logros son inconclusos en los distintos ámbitos de la justicia transicional y en los distintos países, debido al pobre estudio sistemático de las experiencias del pasado o de un fecundo intercambio de las lecciones aprendidas de los diferentes contextos. Lamentablemente, la justicia transicional todavía depende de los enfoques ad hoc con el género.

TRANSITIONAL GENDER JUSTICE
Transitional justice approaches often neglect women's experience of political violence. Far too often, truth commission mandates, judicial opinions, reparations schemes, and reform policy proposals are written, interpreted, and implemented with little regard for the distinct and complex rights violations and injuries women suffer. Neglect of gendered patterns of abuse affects both women and men seeking access to justice by limiting the reach of reparations programs, entrenching impunity, distorting the historical record, and undermining the legitimacy of transitional justice initiatives. Moreover, there is still very little understanding of the gendered legacies of authoritarianism, the complex and shifting relationship between extraordinary and ordinary violence, and the opportunities to enhance gender justice that transitional contexts provide.

Acusados liberados
En lo que se interpretó como un nuevo capítulo de la interna judicial de la ciudad de Bariloche, se supo que el juez de instrucción Miguel Angel Gaimaro Pozzi liberó por falta de mérito al padre y al tío de T. N., acusados por la adolescente de abusarla desde hace varios años. Es decir, Gaimaro Pozzi desoyó el relato de las violaciones de la chica que hizo primero ante su mamá, y luego repitió ante profesionales del Hospital de El Bolsón, ante una asistente social del juzgado, un psicólogo forense, su representante legal, un fiscal y el juez Martín Lozada. Todos ellos encontraron su testimonio veraz y creíble. Gaimaro Pozzi tomó la causa penal después de que Lozada se apartara, tras autorizar el aborto no punible, dado que de lo contrario hubiese incurrido en prejuzgamiento, ya que la autorización para la interrupción del embarazo se encuadró en el inciso 2º del Código Penal, que prevé permiso en caso de violación. State, groups push for audit of Sacramento, Marin family courts

The state is threatening to subpoena family courts in Sacramento and Marin counties to force them to fully cooperate with an audit investigating how those courts decide where to place children at the center of custody disputes.
State Auditor Elaine Howell has been seeking access to court records since July, in response to concerns raised by child advocacy groups that allege the family court judges are overly chummy with their appointed investigators and return too many children to dangerous parents.
Howell accuses the courts of delaying the audit, which was mandated by the state Legislature. She has told the Judicial Council of California – the policy-making arm for state courts – that her office will issue subpoenas unless the courts allow "full and unfettered" access to the records requested.

Menos del 5 por ciento de mujeres que recurren a ILE no son del DF

México, DF. 20 abr (CIMAC).- A pesar de que en 17 estados del país se criminaliza a las mujeres que interrumpen una gestación no deseada , en la capital del país donde el procedimiento es legal, sólo cerca del 5 por ciento de las mujeres que se sometieron a una interrupción legal del embarazo (ILE) provienen del interior de la República, señaló Judith Marques Contró, Consultora Externa de la organización civil IPAS.
Al ofrecer una conferencia magistral en la Escuela Superior de Economía del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), organizada de manera conjunta con la colectiva Xochiquetzalla, la especialista señaló que en materia de aborto es importante hablar de la legalidad, toda vez que es más probable que un aborto sea seguro si es legal, con lo que se prevendrían las muertes de mujeres por esta causa.
Cifras del Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida (GIRE) señalan del 27 de abril de 2007 al 12 de marzo de 2010 en el DF 37 mil mujeres se han realizado una ILE en la red de hospitales capitalinos. De ellas 76 por ciento (28,773), son residentes del DF; 21 por ciento (7,933) residentes del Estado de México; y sólo 3 por ciento residentes de otros estados (1070).

Inicia Diálogo Internacional sobre Justicia para las Mujeres
Analizan expertas delitos sexuales hacia las mujeres en el mundo

Puerto Vallarta, 20 abr 10 (CIMAC).- La forma en cómo se han empleado los procesamientos y la jurisprudencia de la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) en los casos de delitos sexuales hacia las mujeres en el mundo, fueron analizados hoy aquí por 50 mujeres de diversas nacionalidades expertas en la defensa de los Derechos Humanos (DH).
En el primer día de trabajo del “Diálogo Internacional sobre Justicia para las Mujeres”, de cara a la Conferencia de Revisión, a 10 años del Estatuto de Roma y de la CPI, que se realizará del 31 de mayo al 11 de junio en Kampala, Uganda, las expertas recopilan aquí las diferentes propuestas de desarrollo legal para establecer los casos de mujeres ante la CPI.

país, para tomar cartas en el asunto y eliminar estas cifras negras y
dolorosas?...*

Carolina Vieira de Valero fue asesinada por su marido, el boxeador
Inca Valero este domingo 18 de Abril, su caso fue dado a conocer, a través
de medios escritos y como bien lo destaca, Gioconda, denunciado por la
víctima, los médicos de la víctima y por las feministas… Sin embargo, de
nada valieron las denuncias, ni el sufrimiento de Carolina, ni las denuncias
realizadas previamente en diferentes instancias, porque este individuo había
agredido físicamente a su madre y a su hermana… Por otra parte, este
boxeador reconocido, fue “premiado” con un viaje a Cuba, donde sería sometido
a un tratamiento, y cuando iba rumbo al aeropuerto, un percance
automovilístico, le concedió la gracia de darse a la fuga y la posibilidad
de consumar su crimen definitivamente, crimen que ya había iniciado desde
las primeras agresiones.
Ahora, Carolina está muerta, trágica y muy tristemente, como un grupo
innumerable y *anónimo* de mujeres que han vivido situaciones,
dolorosamente similares… ¿Y la impunidad?... Bien, gracias. La impunidad
está viva y disfrutando de muy buena salud. La justicia reposa en los brazos
de Morfeo, mientras la *injusticia patriarcal* hace de las suyas,
desatendiendo, obviando, despreciando, discriminando a las mujeres y a todo
lo que tenga que ver con la participación y la equidad de género y nosotras,
las mujeres tenemos que activar nuestra *sororidad*, en la acción y en la
reflexión crítica y comprometida, para desenmascarar las actitudes y las
respuestas laxas de quienes forman parte de la administración de justicia y
de todos los espacios donde supuestamente, se promueven y se defienden
nuestros derechos como mujeres.
No sólo las instituciones públicas y privadas, tienen el deber y el
compromiso de defender nuestros derechos humanos como mujeres, como
ciudadanas y ciudadanos también debemos tomar cartas en el asunto, en el día
a día, en la comunicación cotidiana, en la experiencia educativa, en la
visibilización de esta aguda y terrible problemática, en la actitud
responsable del llamado de atención y de la denuncia oportuna, en el apoyo
a las víctimas de violencia.
Estas reflexiones no nos alejan de la impotencia, de la rabia, del
dolor profundo que nos produce la muerte de Carolina, una víctima que se
suma a un grupo significativo de muertes de mujeres, cuyos casos no se han
conocido públicamente pero que duermen el sueño de los justos en
innumerables expedientes y muchos de ellos, ni siquiera han sido
denunciados, como los que ocurren con mujeres en situación de calle, entre
otros…
No podemos resucitar a Carolina, ni a todas las víctimas de la
violencia de género de nuestro país, pero sí podemos denunciar la impunidad
que progresivamente vamos conociendo y sintiendo de forma muy dolorosa
progresivamente, impunidad presente en diferentes ámbitos, cuando se trata
de violencia hacia la mujer.

Aumentan en México las agresiones contra mujeres periodistas
La ex presentadora de Televisa Isabella Cordero fue asesinada y dos más agredidas

AmecoPress/CIMAC.- El 16 de abril fue asesinada en Chihuahua, María Isabella Cordero, (ex conductora de televisión) y este mismo mes, dos periodistas más sufrieron agresiones, lo cual demuestra que el gremio periodístico en su conjunto aún es vulnerable, señaló Elia Baltazar González, integrante del Consejo Directivo del Centro de Periodismo y Ética Pública (CEPET).
Para la responsable del Programa de Libertad de Expresión del CEPET, si los casos de agresiones contra mujeres periodistas no son tan visibles es porque en las redacciones existe un prejuicio en la asignación de fuentes, debido a que se considera que son las mujeres quienes corren mayor peligro al cubrir temas de seguridad y justicia.

10-year-old's pregnancy fuels Mexican abortion debate By the CNN Wire Staff
Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- A pregnant 10-year-old, allegedly raped by her stepfather, has become the latest lightning rod in the country's heated abortion debate.
The girl's stepfather has been arrested. But advocates on both sides of the issue say their battle is just beginning.
"This girl is much more than an isolated case," said Adriana Ortiz-Ortega, a researcher at Mexico's National Autonomous University who has written two books on abortion in Mexico, "and there is much more influence now from conservative groups that are trying to prevent the legalization of abortion."
Abortion is legal in Mexico's capital city, but prohibited or significantly restricted in most of the country's states. The girl's home state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan peninsula, allows abortion in cases of rape during the first 90 days of the pregnancy. But the 10-year-old girl is at 17½ weeks, nearly a month past that limit.

SAO PAULO — The detention of an 83-year-old priest in Brazil for allegedly abusing boys as young as 12 in a case involving lurid videotape and a congressional investigation has added to the scandals hitting the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America.
The allegations against Monsignor Luiz Marques Barbosa – and two other Brazilian priests – have made headlines throughout the world's most populous Catholic nation and come amid accusations of sexual abuse by priests across the world.

Dear SWAN supporters,
Great things have been happening here at SWAN. We were just awarded a grant from the prestigious New York Women's Foundation to continue our important work with women veterans here in New York City.
Last month, SWAN was briefed by the head of the Pentagon's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO). It was a sobering and horrifying reality check--SAPRO proved that it is grossly ill-equipped to handle the issue of Military Sexual Assault. By the DOD's own estimate, over 13,000 servicemembers are sexually assaulted every year; but SAPRO has neither the leadership, the will, nor the knowledge to make a dent in these numbers.
Sadly, these numbers don’t even scratch the surface when it comes to Military Sexual Harassment—an almost daily occurrence for countless servicewomen. Unless WE mobilize to educate the public and policy makers about why sexual abuse and discrimination run rampant in the armed forces, tens of thousands of troops each year will continue to be terrorized by their own peers while serving our country.
With support from Military Sexual Trauma (MST) advocates, veterans service, women's rights and human rights organizations, SWAN is launching an advocacy campaign to educate the nation about sexual assault and sexual harassment in the military. In the next year, SWAN's goal is to mobilize the public and build the momentum to reform current DOD policy to increase accountability by commanders, protection of survivors, and prosecution of perpetrators.
SWAN continues to provide rigorous policy analysis and to build therapeutic community programs for all women veterans. But we can't do any of this work without you. While our influence is national and our staff's passion palpable, SWAN operates on little more than adrenaline, desire for social justice, and a shoe-string budget. We humbly ask for your help so that we can support the women veterans and skilled professional volunteers who make up the majority of our small staff, and so we can continue to speak for the voiceless and improve the lives of today's and tomorrow's women in uniform. El seminario sobre la Resolución 1325 ha tenido por objetivo realizar un balance de los logros y principales retos que enfrenta la puesta en práctica de la Resolución con motivo del décimo Aniversario de su aprobación por parte del Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas.
También ha sido objetivo del seminario el análisis de la experiencia española y suiza en la aplicación de sus Planes de Acción con objeto de identificar las buenas prácticas de estos Gobiernos en la aplicación de esta resolución, así como los principales obstáculos y desafíos que enfrentan.
