Christine Ahn interviews CHARLOTTE BUNCH, Founder of the Center for Global Women's Leadership

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 25, 2010 (IPS) - One year after U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration, how has his administration fared in terms of advancing an agenda for women's rights around the world?

Charlotte Bunch, founding director of the Center for Global Women's Leadership at Rutgers University and a longtime feminist scholar activist, as well as a board member of the Global Fund for Women, spoke with Christine Ahn about her assessment of the U.S. president's achievements, and what remains to be done.

To whom this may concern;
*
* I was hoping that you could look into this story of a 6 year old girl who was the victim of a serious offense. I would like you to help me find out what her rights are. I would hope that everyone in the Treasure Valley would come together and fight for this innocent child.
* The offender, Fabian Omar Alvarez, who is 24 years of age, is facing charges right now for Lewid & Lascivious conduct with a minor under the age of 16. Why does he get away with such a small punishment like probation, as the little girl has to live with these sick memories, and he just gets to walk away? Just because this is his first offense doesn’t mean his punishment should be any less severe. Does that make it right for a first-time murder to get a lesser charge because it’s his/her first time?
* On May 31, 2008, the day after the victim’s 5th birthday, on a cozy night at her home, the victim told her dad what happened while having a cup of hot chocolate. It is not clear when the crime was actually committed, but from the victim’s statement to her father, it is clear a crime was committed.
* She says that one day at daycare; one of her friend’s dads (Fabian Alvarez) took her into another room separate from the other children and had her take off her clothes, and was touching her in private places. She told him to stop, and her friend was banging on the door. She asked what they were doing, and then told the victim to put her clothes back on. He told the other young girl to enter the room and close the door, but the victim and the other girl quickly fled. The daycare owner showed up shortly after the incident. The victim claims she told her daycare provider. The caregiver kept the child’s secret, and later claims the child didn’t even tell her.
* The Health and Welfare license states in section 3, “Please list…caregivers, volunteers, frequent visitors, and all others who have unsupervised contact with the children in the setting.” The victim’s caregiver did not list multiple people who had contact with the children and even the people who lived with her including her husband and stepson.
* Nampa Police Department went to the residence to speak with the suspect (Alvarez) and asked him to be questioned on the incident. Alvarez asked the police officers if there were any classes he could take so he didn’t have to go to jail, yet he plead not guilty to the later charges. The police had to let him go, because they can only hold suspects for twenty-four hours.
* In the meantime, the victim’s parents brought her to the Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the victim had a video taped statement giving the detectives a warrant for Alvarez’s arrest.
* When the police went to arrest Alvarez, they discovered he had fled to California, where he lived for a year, when one fateful day, his friend’s car broke down on the side of the road. An officer ran his driver’s license and found that Alvarez was a wanted fugitive in the state of Idaho.
* Alvarez was expedited back to Idaho in October 2009. He was arraigned on October 1, 2009 with Lewid & Lascivious Conduct. He was then assigned a free public prosecuting attorney. On October 16, 2009, Alvarez plead not guilty to the charges of Lewid and Lascivious Conduct.
* Alvarez had hired a personal Attorney and they are asking “Felony injury to a child”. There for he will not be put on a Sex a Offenders list and jail time.
* On Monday, January 12, 2010, Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney notified the victim’s parents of Alvarez’s plea bargain. The Victim Witness Coordinator told the victim’s mother and father that if Alvarez pleads guilty, he will not have to register as a sex offender and might receive probation.
* This is a very minor punishment for the crime that he committed. He will only have two years of punishment, as the victim will have to live with these memories and shame for the rest of her life.
* As a Good Samaritan, I am asking if you could help me put Alvarez in his place, and not just give criminals a slap on the hand. What Alvarez did was very wrong, and he deserves to know that. This little girl had no chance of defending herself against a full grown man, and he is hardly being punished for what he did. Please contact me when you have thought this over, and tell me what we should do to make the children in our community safe.

KBR Calls Jamie Leigh Jones A Liar
— By Stephanie Mencimer

| Mon Jan. 25, 2010 11:38 AM PSTEver since its contract employee Jamie Leigh Jones went public with allegations that in 2005, she was drugged and gang raped by some of her co-workers in Iraq and then detained in a storage container, KBR/Halliburton has fought her efforts to sue in a public courtroom. Jones had been forced to sign a mandatory arbitration agreement as part of her employment contract, which required her to bring any work-related claims before a private arbitrator hired by KBR rather than a jury. Jones fought the agreement and in September, prevailed in one of the most conservative federal appeals courts in the country. Her story persuaded Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) to pass legislation to ban defense contractors from using arbitration agreements in cases of sexual assault.

But last week, KBR signaled its intention to continue fighting Jones, no matter how bad it makes the company look.

ACCESS TO ABORTION FOR WOMEN IN IRELAND

Direct Link to Full 57-Page Report:
www.hrw.org/sites/default/files/reports/ireland0110webwcover.pdf

Dublin, January 28, 2010 - The Irish government actively seeks to restrict access to abortion services and information both within Ireland and for its residents seeking care abroad, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

The 57-page report, "A State of Isolation: Access to Abortion for Women in Ireland," details how women struggle to overcome the financial, logistical, physical, and emotional burdens imposed by restrictive laws and policies that force them to seek care abroad, without support from the state. Every year thousands of women and girls travel from Ireland to other European countries for abortions.

"Women in need of abortion services should, as a matter of international law and - frankly -human decency, be able to count on support from their government as they face a difficult situation," said Marianne Mollmann, women's rights advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. "But in Ireland they are actively stonewalled, stigmatized, and written out."

AFGHANISTAN PEACE IS IMPOSSIBLE IF WOMEN, HALF THE
POPULATION, ARE EXCLUDED FROM DISCUSSIONS

AFGHANISTAN WOMEN RIGHTS DEFENDERS MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR
STABILIZATION, RECONSTRUCTION & DEVELOPMENT OF AFGHANISTAN
A day ahead of the London Conference, women's groups make strong recommendations for reconstruction and development.

27 January 2010
Oisika Chakrabarti, UNIFEM Media Specialist, oisika.chakrabarti@unifem.org

London - In the lead-up to the 28 January London Conference on Afghanistan hosted by the UK Government, Afghan women human rights defenders today released strong, specific recommendations on security, development and governance priorities for their country. These recommendations provide the only concrete input from consultation with Afghan women into the key decisions affecting the future of their country that will be set in London by international actors.

Deeply concerned about the exclusion of Afghan women's perspectives from the dialogue surrounding the London Conference, the statement issued today by the women activists comes as a result of broad-based consultations with Afghan women civil society leaders at the Dubai Women's Dialogue and London Dialogue over the last week, involving the Afghan Women's Network and supported by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Institute for Inclusive Security.

"As the global community knows, nowhere are women's human rights more at stake than in Afghanistan. Therefore it is of grave concern that women's voices and perspectives are largely missing from this London conference on Afghanistan's future. The international community should stand behind the women of Afghanistan and elevate their voices, not barter away their rights in the name of short-term peace and stabilization," said Wazma Frogh, Afghan Gender and Development Specialist.

Domestic Abuse May Affect Reproductive Freedom
By Kristina Fiore, Staff Writer, MedPage Today

In a cross-sectional study of women treated at five family clinics across northern California, about 20% of women said that their partner tried to coerce them into having a child, Elizabeth Miller, MD, of the University of California Davis, and colleagues reported online in the journal Contraception.

Beyond outright coercion, abusive partners also engaged in birth control sabotage, for example, poking holes in condoms and flushing birth control pills down the toilet.

"It was stunning to have this many women seeking reproductive health services saying, 'this has happened to me,'" Miller said.

To investigate a possible link between domestic violence and forced pregnancy, the researchers conducted a survey of 1,278 women ages 16 to 29 who sought care at the five family planning clinics in northern California.

A Request to Men's Organizations and Allies for Support of Protective Child Custody (with Spanish & French Translations)
From the NOMAS Child Custody Task Group

Male supremacist groups (“Father’s Rights”) have caused unspeakable harm to our country and to our children by encouraging abusive fathers, often with little past involvement with their children, to seek custody as a tactic to pressure a mother to return or to punish her for leaving. "Shared parenting", "friendly parent", involvement of both parents and other concepts that seem fair and benevolent have instead been used to manipulate courts and legislatures to help abusive fathers. For instance, women are routinely denied custody of their children after being classified as "unfriendly" for asserting that the husband has abused them or their children.

Teen pregnancy increases after decade-long decline

Following a steep decline in the 1990s and a flattening out in the early 2000s, teen pregnancy rates increased in 2006—reflected in both increased birth and abortion rates. The significant drop in teen pregnancy rates in the 1990s was overwhelmingly due to more and better contraceptive use by sexually active teens. However, this downward trend flattened out and then reversed itself at the same time that programs aimed exclusively at promoting abstinence—which are prohibited from discussing the benefits of contraception—became increasingly widespread, and teens’ use of contraceptives declined…
