VA vows to improve military’s sexual trauma care
MEDIA RELEASE
An Inspector General investigation requested by Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI) found the Department of Veterans Affairs is unable to sufficiently monitor whether veterans are being wrongly charged for care related to military sexual trauma.
Last year, Akaka requested an investigation after being contacted by a veteran who was being inappropriately charged for care at a VA facility in Texas.
Under existing law, veterans are entitled to free VA treatment for conditions related to military sexual trauma.
In response to the investigation, VA leadership committed to changing monitoring across the VA health care system so potential billing errors can be corrected.
“I am concerned that some veterans may still be charged for care they should receive for free, unnecessarily adding complications to the recovery process” Akaka said. “However, I am pleased that VA’s leadership is ordering changes system-wide as the Inspector General recommended. I will continue to monitor this issue.”
Akaka also thanked the veteran who initially contacted him to share evidence of this problem last year.
“If she had not stood up for her fellow veterans, these national changes would not be in the works. Once again, this veteran has served her country well,” he said.

Analysis
Sustaining Women's Gains in Rwanda
The success of women parliamentarians in Rwanda has prompted questions
about how women achieved such unprecedented levels of political
representation. The paper begins with a discussion of various Rwandan
cultural practices that either support or undercut gender equality,
then analyzes how actors in contemporary Rwandan politics reference
indigenous practices in relation to women€ ¦’²s empowerment. This paper
contends that modern references to gender-sensitive practices in
Rwanda€ ¦’²s pre-colonial era aim to generate support for women€ ¦’²s
political participation by emphasizing its continuity with traditional
culture and, in doing so, defuse opposition. The Rwandan case suggests
a strategy available to women and men seeking to promote gender
equality in political representation elsewhere.

Dear domestic violence advocates,
Has a survivor ever asked you whether she should leave your
state with her children to escape the abuse? Have you ever tried to assist
a survivor who fled to your state and is concerned about the consequences of
her relocation? If so, you know that these are among the most difficult
cases that victim advocates encounter. The Legal Resource Center on Violence
Against Women (LRC), with the generous support of the Avon Foundation, will
be offering a basic telephonic training on these and related interstate
custody issues on Thursday February 18th from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern
time. Participants will be given a toll-free telephone number to listen to
the training. There is no cost to participants.
This training will provide participants with an overview of
the various federal and state laws that govern interstate custody cases.
The training is designed especially for victim advocates who wish to
understand the basic framework of how these laws fit together. Case
scenarios will be used to demonstrate how advocates can help survivors
address the economic, safety and legal issues involved when they cross state
lines for safety. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions
during the presentation.
For further information about the Legal Resource Center on
Violence Against Women advocate training, please contact Ellen at
(301) 270-1550 or at trainings@lrcvaw.org.

Sean James and Al Joyner on the anti-choice Super Bowl ad
I'm incredibly moved by this video Planned Parenthood put together featuring former professional football player Sean James and Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner. It's a beautiful model of male allyship: men are speaking but center the perspectives and decisions of women in their lives. They talk about what they've learned from women and about trusting women with their own choices. This is the message I wish Super Bowl viewers would hear.

Preparan monitoreo OSC y OCNF
Vigilarán cumplimiento a sentencia de Campo Algodonero
Por Paulina Rivas Ayala
CIMAC

SIGN THE PETITION: Giumarra Vineyards sued by EEOC for Sexual Harassment & Retaliation
We need your help. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has just filed suit against Giumarra Vineyards for allegedly violating federal law by sexually harassing a teenage female farm worker and retaliating against farm workers who came to her aid.
You most probably remember Giumarra, and their Nature’s Partner label, from the emails we sent you last summer. We told you about their outrageous behavior and despicable actions against workers—many of whom are organizing for a union contract. Giumarra Vineyards, the world's largest table grape company, harvests approximately 1 out of every 10 bunches of grapes picked in the US. Because the company is so huge, their behavior helps set the industry standard.
The EEOC case is consistent with the company’s behavior, as Giumarra has a long history of intimidating workers and violating their rights. According to the EEOC’s suit (EEOC v. Giumarra Vineyards Corporation, et al, Case No. 1:09-cv-02255), the young woman “was subjected to sexual advances, sexually inappropriate touching and abusive and offensive sexual comments about the male sex organ by a male co-worker.” The EEOC further alleged that after witnessing the sexual harassment, farm workers came to the aid of the teenage victim and complained to Giumarra Vineyards.
The result? One day after reporting the incident, the victim and people who helped her were fired. The EEOC suit states they “were summarily discharged in retaliation for their opposition to the sexual harassment.” (More details in the EEOC’s press release.)
What happened to this vulnerable young girl and the others who simply came to her defense was reprehensible and illegal.
We have begun an online petition. A delegation of women leaders will hand it in to Giumarra/Nature’s Partner and attempt to meet with this company in mid-February. Please sign the petition today—and send it to as many friends as possible. Give Giumarra a strong message that you will not tolerate this behavior.

Fewer street prostitutes after Norwegian ban
Oslo - The number of street prostitutes has decreased noticeably in Oslo a year after Norway banned the purchase of sexual favours, according to estimates published Friday. The Oslo-based Pro Centre, a publicly funded social service centre that works with male and female prostitutes, estimates there was a 50-per-cent drop between 2008 and 2009 - the first year the ban was in force.

Call to end shared custody: Chisholm report
Caroline Overington From: The Australian
A REPORT commissioned by the Rudd government recommends major changes to the controversial shared parenting law introduced by former prime minister John Howard, saying it has put women and children at risk.
The report by retired Family Court judge Richard Chisholm says the law has also set fathers up to believe they are entitled to a 50-50 time split with their children after divorce, when this was never the parliament's intention, nor part of the law. The report into family law was ordered by Attorney-General Robert McClelland, in response to the shocking death of four-year-old Melbourne girl Darcey Freeman, who was thrown to her death from the West Gate Bridge one year ago.
Her father, Arthur Freeman, is now facing a murder charge.
In launching the report yesterday, Mr McClelland said it was "motivated at least in part by the very tragic events, in the case of Darcey Freeman".
It has previously been reported that Darcey's mother was too frightened to raise allegations of violence in the Family Court, lest she be considered an "unfriendly" parent determined to interrupt the relationship between the children and their father.
She ultimately agreed to a custody arrangement that gave her former husband access to all three of their children.
It is alleged that Mr Freeman threw Darcey from the bridge on her first day of school.

Constante aumento del femicidio en Centroamérica
CERIGUA
