Background
As demanded by UN Security Council Resolution 1794, the UN in DRC (MONUC and the UN Country Team) has developed a Comprehensive Strategy on Combating Sexual Violence in the DRC. The Strategy was launched with the Government of the DRC in Kinshasa on 1 April 2009. The role of the Strategy is to coordinate the UN's support behind Government's efforts to prevent sexual violence, bring perpetrators to justice and ensure that the survivors of sexual violence receive comprehensive response and redress.
The Strategy was developed on Sexual Violence, funded by UN Action during 2008 to early 2009. An independent assessment of UN Action's strategic support to the UN system in DRC was carried out in March 2009. One of its main findings was the need for continued strategic support to facilitate the operationalization of the Comprehensive Strategy and to develop a feasible implementation plan of prioritised tasks and outcomes agreed with various UN, Government, NGO and donor stakeholders. A Broken U.N. Promise In Congo
By Eve Ensler
Tuesday, June 30, 2009
BUKAVU, Democratic Republic of Congo -- Just over a year ago, in answering whether sexual violence in conflict was an issue that the U.N. Security Council should take on, then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice proclaimed, "I am proud that, today, we respond to that lingering question with a resounding 'yes!' " With this statement, and with the cooperation of other power brokers at the table, the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1820, which finally recognized sexual violence as a widely used strategy of warfare and cleared the path for the council to respond to it worldwide.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is to report to the Security Council today on implementation of Resolution 1820. What will we learn? A year after adopting the resolution, Congo remains the worst place on the planet to be a woman. Over 12 years, in a regional economic war for resources, hundreds of thousands of women and girls have been raped and tortured, their bodies destroyed by unimaginable acts. The Security Council's implementation of Resolution 1820 in Congo -- the very place that inspired it -- has been an utter failure.

I am a victim of domestic abuse and my children witness it. I need help and do not know where to turn. I have tried to leave my abuser several times and he will not allow it and threatens to burn my house with my children and I in it. I have a restraining order and it does not help. I do not want to report this to authorities because I will lose my children to the state, because of what they witnessed and I do not want that to happen. I need a safe place to go but I do not trust that my children will not be taken from me. I do not have enough money to leave. I work full-time but I make $10. an hour. What should I do and do you know who can help me?

Didn’t Abraham Lincoln End Slavery?
ShareThisBy Anna Befort
Published in Southern California Rising Stars 2009 — July 2009
The images are haunting. A smiling 9-year-old girl says she knows how to perform oral sex. A pimp offers up a 5-year-old girl for intercourse. A middle-aged American doctor tells the hidden camera he likes to buy three girls—preferably age 15 or 16—for the night for $50.
It's enough to make you sick. Which is exactly how attorney Esther Chang felt, sitting in her Los Angeles apartment in 2005, watching the Dateline NBC special on human trafficking in Cambodia.
"It got me so disgusted and I couldn't believe that there were girls that young," she says. "And some of the clients were foreigners from the U.S. or other Western countries, and a lot of pedophiles."
So Chang decided to do something about it. Months later, she attended a talk by Gary Haugen, a former federal prosecutor who founded the International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency featured in the Dateline special. Further inspired, she applied to IJM and was offered a volunteer position in its Mumbai office. Luckily, her firm, McDermott Will & Emery, was open to the idea of her taking a one-year sabbatical from its health law department, where she worked as an associate. And so began the adventure that Chang, now 33, calls the "most memorable year of my life."

An Advocate for Women
Domestic violence is a serious law enforcement and public health problem affecting as many as one in four women in this country. Yet Washington has devoted too little attention to reducing domestic violence and sexual assaults generally. We welcome President Obama’s decision to create a new post, White House adviser on violence against women, and his appointment of a seasoned advocate for victims to fill it.

NOTE FROM NANCY
Dear Pro-Choice Activist,
Just as we were celebrating Al Franken's victory in Minnesota, we received disturbing news: Anti-choice senators are using health reform to attack your reproductive-health care coverage.
Unless we act now, the Senate could ban reproductive-health services from being covered in the new health-care system.
Millions of women could lose coverage for abortion care even if their private health insurance already covers it!
We're going from office to office at the Capitol, teaming up with our partners in other organizations, and exposing this anti-choice attack through the media. But we can't win without you.
Please urge your senators to oppose such a move:
action.prochoiceamerica.org/site/R?i=6J18dRDhsZzDbS8-GBu2WQ
If we lose and a ban is introduced as part of health-care reform, there's little chance of getting it removed later. There is no second chance.
If you do one thing before the holiday weekend, contact your senators.
My best,
Nancy Keenan
President, NARAL Pro-Choice America
==================================== ====
ACT NOW
Say goodbye to reproductive-health services
Unless we act now, the Senate could ban reproductive-health services from being covered in the new health-care system. Millions of women could lose coverage for abortion care even if their private health insurance already covers it!
We need your help to convince senators to stand up against this divisive anti-choice attack.
Please urge your senators to oppose such a move:

WOMEN: Dubai, New Destination on Trafficking Map
By Claudia Ciobanu
Credit:Mimi Chakarova
BUCHAREST, Jun 29 (IPS) - On May 26, the U.S.-based Center for Investigative Reporting published ‘The Price of Sex’, a vast multi-media project by photojournalist Mimi Chakarova who spent nearly seven years doggedly unraveling the web of sex trafficking.
Chakarova has charted hundreds of journeys across countries in Europe and to the tiny emirate of Dubai in the Gulf, where the sex trade is booming, seemingly condoned by authorities, according to a rights activist. The Bulgarian photojournalist currently lives and works in the U.S.
"I wanted to address the complexity of trafficking, how it works, and how deeply it breaks the human spirit," the photojournalist told IPS in a detailed email interview about her work - a series of many videos, photos and text. "The impact I hope to achieve is first and foremost to inform and educate my viewers."

Woman exchanges sex acts for food
This story was all over the U.S. press in late June. No one seems to be noting what is obvious.
MAYBE SHE WAS HUNGRY. Why was her name and photo released but her john stays invisible? Why was she fined but the john was not fined? Has anyone noticed that she is one of the people who are most hard-hit by the triple whammy of sex, race, and class in the sex industry? Where are the social justice activists who could speak out in support of her? There's a deafening silence out there.
Woman pleads no contest in chips-for-sex case
Wednesday, June 24, 2009 (Associated Press)
A woman has been fined $1,142 after pleading no contest to prostitution charges after she was accused of accepting a box of chips for sex. Police said they arrested 36-year-old Lahoma Sue Smith in southeast Oklahoma City after finding her in her car with a man who told officers he knew he could find a prostitute in the area.
Smith told officers the man said he didn't have any money so she agreed to accept a $30 case of chips as payment.
The man was not charged and his name hasn't been released.

Traffic Jamming Hawaii
About the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery (P.A.S.S.)
Formed in January 2009, the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery (P.A.S.S.) is a coalition of both secular and faith-based groups based in Hawaii who share the common mission to educate the public about the growing problem of human trafficking, advocate for the passage of local state legislation to illegalize sex-trafficking (especially laws that focus on prosecuting pimps and "johns") and to ensure the enforcement of such legislation.
Our members individually hold positions in public interest legal services, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), churches, non-profit community organizations, state and federally funded anti-trafficking task forces, domestic violence shelters, educational institutions, and law enforcement.
P.A.S.S. is a firmly abolitionist alliance committed to ending human trafficking, the modern-day form of slavery, and is primarily concerned with helping the survivors of sex-trafficking while advocating for the strict prosecution of pimps and "johns."
P.A.S.S. believes that the current state penalties do not fit the crime of sex-trafficking and must be raised significantly to be just. P.A.S.S. firmly believes that appropriate anti-trafficking legislation would carry the highest state penalty for pimps/traffickers of 20 years in prison with no parole and a $25,000 fine (Class A Felony) as mirrored by Federal Law (18 U.S.C. Section 2422(a)) maximum penalty up to 20 years for pimps/traffickers; (18 U.S.C. Section 1591), for trafficking minors under 14, or with force, minimum 15 years to life term; for trafficking minors between the ages of 14 to 18 years of age: 10 years to life term.

Supreme Court Decision on Ricci a Setback to Workplace Equality
Legal Momentum Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Ricci
Decision Will Undermine Critical Role of Nation's Civil Rights Laws in
Achieving Equality in the Workplace
WASHINGTON, D.C. and NEW YORK (June 29, 2009) -- Legal Momentum,
the nation's oldest legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing
women's rights, is deeply concerned by the U.S. Supreme
Court's ruling today in Ricci v. DeStefano, a decision that will
undermine the critical role of the country's civil rights laws
in the historic struggle of women and minorities to achieve equality
in the workplace. The Court created a new, more stringent
standard for employment discrimination claims in striking down the New
Haven Fire Department's attempt to ensure that its promotional
exam did not discriminate against Black and Latino
candidates. We believe that the standard articulated by the
Court reflects a flawed interpretation of Title VII and is contrary to
congressional intent.
Irasema Garza, President of Legal Momentum, stated: "Employment
discrimination continues to be a major problem. To this day, women and
minorities remain egregiously under-represented in many employment
sectors. Astoundingly, the Court's decision acknowledges this
fact and yet requires employers to avoid policies and practices that
would help to remedy this discrimination. This decision will make
it far more difficult for women and minorities to get good jobs in
fields that continue to exclude them, such as firefighting, and for
employers to eliminate barriers that have proved discriminatory in
their effect."
Further, as a supporter of Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to
the Supreme Court, Legal Momentum strongly disagrees with those
who might use the Court's decision to imply that Judge
Sotomayor and her colleagues in the Second Circuit erred in their
ruling below. The Second Circuit panel of which Judge
Sotomayor was a part acted with appropriate restraint in applying the
precedent as it existed at that time. The matter before
the Supreme Court involved issues of first impression and the
Second Circuit's opinion was consistent with the views of four
Justices on the Supreme Court as well as with the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission and the Department of Justice.
Legal Momentum joined in an amicus brief submitted to the Supreme
Court in the Ricci case. The brief described how the disparate impact
theory under Title VII has been instrumental in women's entering
"non-traditional" fields like firefighting.

Today's Supreme Court decision demonstrates the importance
of Legal Momentum's work to expand opportunities for women in
high-paying jobs from which they have historicaly been excluded,
and to end gender discrimination in the vocational schools which keeps
girls from choosing these careers for themselves.

Racism claim gets under L'Oréal's skin
Matthew Campbell, Paris
FRENCH pledges to combat racism will be put to the test this week when a judge decides whether a cosmetics company was guilty of discrimination in a recruitment campaign.
The case against L’Oréal, the country’s best-known manufacturer of beauty products, is the first of its kind since riots last year focused attention on discrimination against immigrant jobseekers from the suburbs. The verdict to be delivered on Thursday, which could include a hefty fine, will be seen as a measure of French resolve to tackle the problem.
Garnier, one of L’Oréal’s top brands, has been accused of instructing an employment agency to hire only slim women of the “BBR type” as hostesses to hand out leaflets and samples of shampoos for a supermarket promotion campaign in 2001.
“BBR” was shorthand for “Bleu Blanc Rouge” — meaning blue, white and red, the colours of the French flag. Typical of the image the company is accused of wanting to promote is that of the actress Virginie Ledoyen, a model for L’Oréal until last year.
Prosecutors have argued that “BBR” is a well-known employers’ code for excluding people of Arab, African or Asian origin. The term is also used in literature of the racist, far-right National Front party, according to Samuel Thomas, of SOS-Racism, the anti-discrimination group that brought the case.
“This sort of thing is ideologically objectionable and must be stopped right away,” he said. “The message it gives is that the only valid sort of French people are white people.”
